Is this a light leak?
« on: March 02, 2012, 04:57:59 PM »
I just scanned the first roll with my Arax 88 and I'm wondering what those diagonal streaks are. Are these light leaks in the back or maybe the camera body? Or could it be because I didn't use a lens hood on the CZJ 50mm Flektogon? This lens also has a few minor scratches on the front element which might contribute to lens flare.

Looks like flare to me, not a light leak.

judging by the angle of the shadows on the ground and the "rainbow" of the streak, I'm going for flare too.

Slap on a lens hood and see if that remedies the problem...not that it's a problem..I mean it is kinda cool looking.   :)

BTW- love the shades on the tot!  So cute!

Thanks guys. The lens hood is already on its way from China :)

And even though it's not my kid I must admit that this is a fun idea. These French people, they even dress up their kids ;)

I'd go for flare too.

When it's a scratch that flares, the mark is in the direction of the scratch no matter where the light is from.
But as soon as the lens itself is shaded from parasite light, the scratch becomes totally invisible.

A scratch on the front element is not so bad. On the rear element, it's a killer.

+1 for flare, I would be surprised to see a light leak so well defined as in the first sample and at an angle to the frame edges, mostly comes from camera features that are square to or parallel with the frarme edges like the nice example shown just above this post.  That must be a quite flare prone lens though...
Edit:  well, looking at a few random web reviews owners reckon not an inherently flarey lens but it is clear from the pics that the front surface of the front element is not recessed much at all so as suggested already by others even a shallow hood might make a big difference.  Looks like one cool piece o' glass  ;)

We should totally start a light leak thread. :)

One for the bucket:

Turns out, a Yashica FX-3 likes to be covered. After the test roll I ran with gaffer's tape for a couple of months until the replacement leather came in. I kind of miss the tape, though.

That's definitely look like flare Urban.

I've the same kit (Arax 88CM + Flektogon) and it does flare sometimes without the hood on.

Love your second picture btw.  :)
