Topic: How Long is a Roll of Film?

I'm being lazy. I'm sure there are fairly easy ways to find out, but how long is a roll of 35mm (24 or 36 exposures...I'm easy and just want a rough figure). Am wondering how much of a deal something like 100 feet of bulk load stock is.

The figure 65 inches comes to mind for 36 exp, I could be way off as I'm not near any film and measure-seems ballpark

Without measuring.... lets say you can get 40 exposures max out of a 36 roll.  Each frame is 36mm wide plus approx 2mm between frames, so thats  38 x 40 = 1520mm, which is approx 60 inches, so with the leader then 65 inches sounds about right

If you put a slightly short leader on the film, you can get away with a 63 inch long piece of film which is 5.25 feet... 100/5.25=19.04 rolls per spool.

But that depends on your bulk loader to some extent... for some odd reason, every roll I spooled to 24 exposures end up counting 30 frames

Ed - Im think im unanimous in you buying a bulk loader and a 100ft reel of film, then selling to me at a cheap price once spooled.

I'm glad you posted this question Ed... I have recently aqcuired 200 feet of Ilford cine film and I was wondering how many rolls I could get... Francois maths shows that I can get nearly 40 rolls ! it's quite a good deal...

I am sure it was the Germans who got us all tangled up with 35mm film thus making us Imperial users gnash our teeth every time we used some 10x8 paper to do a print - could they have just gone along with the Brits just that once 

Anyway because of the German factor you will most probably find that a roll of 36exp 35mm film is in fact not 65" but 1.5metres long

I've once seen a Nikon Bulk Loader. Strangely enough, it is not a self contained device. There is one part that holds the big spool and another with a crank that winds the film. It has to be used in the darkroom. Building something similar out of a couple of chunks of wood shouldn't be too hard...

Anyways, if you need the measurements in turns of the film spool, here they are.

36 exp = 31 turns
24 exp = 24 turns
18 exp = 19 turns
10 exp = 13 turns

Okay it is a given that the more film you wind on the bigger the spool diameter thus less turns for more frames.

Given what François has put up, what is the:

1) Starting size of the spool
2) Final diameter of the spool with 36 frames of film
3) Tension of film to maintain final diameter
4) Thickness of the film

C'mon FW's you can do it !!!
