what happened here????
« on: September 05, 2011, 01:57:04 AM »
a pinhole photo is below that I am kinda stumped with.

I'm not sure how the little "airy discs" were captured on the photo.
I'm used to seeing these when collimating a telescope and the focus is racked out while looking at a star.
But I'm not used to seeing them appear on my pinhole shots.
I sorta like them, and I'd like to figure out a way to duplicate this effect, but am not really certain how I managed it in the first place.

Happy accident, yes!  But if anyone has a reason/explanation on how it occurred, I have my extra large ears on because I'm completely at a loss.

Made with a Crown Graphic...the bellows don't leak because I just made another shot and it was void of the little circular ghosts sprinkled about.

Is it possible you were using a zone plate rather than a pinhole? The concentric rings look very much like one.

lovely pic, good luck replicating it! I'm afraid I'm of no help here.

Peter, I thought that too, but it was one of my hand drilled pinholes, so it's very round and has no burrs around the edges...
I'm very stumped.

Could it be flare reflecting from the sides of the hole?
Drilled holes are essentially photon tunnels...

Francois, it's possible, but I still don't get the circles?
I use very thin brass shimstock for drilling the holes, to avoid the tunnel factor...but who knows?
It's  a mystery to me.

Could it be a form of bokeh, with highlights causing the repeated pattern of your pinhole?
Maybe with a bit of diffraction thrown in, giving it the zone plate type effect Peter mentioned.

This image shows something similar, with the blades of the aperture forming the image.
