of the US, that is.

Batten down the hatches and stay safe.  I usually don't take these things all that seriously but I'm making an exception for Irene.

Foul weather is not something to take lightly... I live in a strong wind area... we often get severe storm or wind warnings.

Hopefully it will turn out just like that earthquake that barely made the ground move yet made the news go on a spin.

Here's a view of the monster from the space station...
Took them 6 minutes to fly across it... consider that they do an orbit every 90 minutes and that will give you an idea of the size...

Here in NYC, and while all the media comments about high winds and skyscrapers is making me a little nervous, I'm mostly worried about my car, which is parked in an underground garage, and is packed full of my photographs (ahead of an art fair next weekend). I'm not in a flood zone, so hopefully I'll be OK.

But my first thought while watching the news tonight, when they showed Grand Central Sation completely empty was, 'DAMN! I missed a chance to get some good photos there!'

Well, that was pretty brutal.  I've never seen rain fall as heavily or as steadily as that.  My street was a river all night.  Spent the night in the basement making sure the sump pumps were working.  Thankfully we only lost power intermittently, so cleanup won't be bad.  As I write this she's just due to hit Manhattan--fingers crossed for everyone in the city.

It's just beginning to rain around here... we're in the 50-75mm of rain region... with strong winds.
They even say to tie down the BBQ's so they don't fly off!
Eh! I don't have a BBQ... maybe I'll get a free one in the storm!

Got the gazebo down this morning and stacked all the lawn chairs just in case.

An update:
The public security minister just announced that we are currently having 100mm of rain per hour and winds of 120km/h... and Irene is not here yet!

Thankfully, it seems to have been less destructive than anticipated originally but still a very nasty tropical storm. I'm sure I speak for us all when I say I hope all our US / Canadian brethren came through unscathed. Should make for some interesting shots, peeps....

It looks like Vermont is getting pummeled by flooding rivers.  Inland New Jersey also lots of flooding.  The coastal cities got through it pretty well.

Here, apart from broken branches, not much to report...
Almost ran out of electricity a couple of times. A friend lost power from 2 to 7 pm... not too bad considering how big this thing was!

We've been out of power since yesterday morning--they're saying it'll be another day or two before it's back on.  One nice thing about shooting film--I was able to process by candle light last night.  Couldn't scan of course.  Not a lot to shoot here (NJ) storm-wise.  The dramatic stuff was all the water, but it happened in pitch blackness (and anyhow I had other things on my mind).  Major roads in and out of Princeton are all still closed.  Every river and stream burst its banks so there are traffic jams everywhere (why, you may ask) and Starbucks (where I am sitting now) in the center of town is jammed because they have power and coffee and wi-fi!
