Collaboration Gallery Number 24 - "Community Spirit"
« on: August 23, 2011, 02:02:36 PM »
All registered Filmwasters are cordially invited to participate in Collaboration Number 24.

------------------------------------
Theme: "Community Spirit"
------------------------------------

There is no right or wrong in a Filmwasters collab. You can be as literal or as lateral as you wish when interpreting the theme, but please take time to include a sentence or two about how your submission relates to the theme.

There is no 'time served' rule with these collaborations so don't worry if you only registered with us a week ago. Join in. The work we receive is always diverse and high-quality and the more people that get involved, the better the resulting gallery will be. So load up you cameras and get wasting film (and/or paper, glass, chemicals, tin, liquid light etc.).

----------------------------------------------------------------

Submission Deadline:  midnight BST Sunday, 18th September 2011

----------------------------------------------------------------

Basic requirements:

JPEG Requirements: One JPEG image. 72dpi.  Not larger than 600-750 ppi. in length or width. No more than 200kb.

PLEASE include your name in the image file name (e.g. "Dave Snapper - Community Spirit.jpg")

**ALSO INCLUDE**

1. A brief explanation of how you interpreted the theme.
2. The camera, process and/or type of film used.
3. Your website or blog address that you'd like listed.

EMAIL SUBMISSIONS to filmwasters [at] gmail.com (please write "Community Spirit" in the subject bar so we can find them easier).

For anyone brave / mad enough, it's the Notting Hill Carnival this weekend, I think. Hopefully, it won't be infiltrated by the nutters who kicked off in London (etc) a few weeks back or "community spirit" might be in short supply.....

I've always wondered. What's up with that 72dpi? Surely no one is going to print the image and requiring a maximum of 750px on the longest side should be enough of a requirement. Or am I missing something here?

Sorry to nitpick :) Especially as I'm probably not going to have the time to shoot something this time.

I always wondered the same thing but just said what the heck... unless the software uses the DPI setting to make the galleries...

Good point, gents. It was something we came up with years ago when we started doing these galleries; I will change it for future collabs.

As long as you keep the file size under 200kb and the longest edge under 750 pix you'll be fine. You're both right; the 72 dpi requirement is a bit redundant, but it was just there to reinforce the fact that we didn't want huge, high quality image files. You should see some of the stuff we've been sent in the last 5 years.

i always thought it was to do with file size.

I thought thats a monitors resolution, as such its all thats required?  have I been wrong all these years?

Nope, you're right about the reason for stating 72dpi and how a resolution of that might reduce the file size, but the guys are also right that if you specify a max file size of 200kb and a max length of 750 pixels, then by default you're going to end up with a pretty small image, so the 72 dpi is an unnecessary stipulation. In 5 years I've not sent in an image to a collab that's 72 dpi....all of mine are 150 or 300 and they're still under 200kb.

Fetes, street parties, local celebrations, Britain in Bloom competitions, Olympics preparations, civic events, riots, reaction to riots, demonstrations, craft fairs, sports team followers (a bit tribal but a community nevertheless), insects (bees, ants, termites, etc...), market traders, sponsored events, religious congregations, street / drunken revellers, trade union events, etc....

Think you'll have trouble getting one image encompassing all these suggestions.

Seriously however food for thought, local church fete coming up maybe get something useful here.
Kids start back at school next week another possibility perhaps.

Is it sad that Community Spirit is so hard to find? I think so. It's there, hiding in places, I know, but not as obvious to us as perhaps in older generations.

Think I might head over to Dorset Steam Fair this weekend with my Yashica and see if I can find some examples of local spirit and colour.

Maybe it's just as valid to take a picture showing the lack of community spirit.

Whatever floats your boat, people. These collaboration themes are open to pretty much ANY interpretation you want to put on it; so don't hold back. I do not want this one to end up as Tumbleweed City. Please do not be put off just because nothing springs to mind instantly.

One of the many triggers that got us thinking about starting up our own website 6 years ago was because another photo community that several of us used to hang out on had collaborations with themes like "Doors"....And guess what? Everyone submitted a photo of a door. Yeah. And while there were some very nice photos of doors; we felt that an opportunity was being missed and that a collaboration theme could challenge the participants at least a little bit and to get them thinking about how to meet the brief and not just point a camera at something. Click. Job done.

Thanks to Paul LD for listing a whole bunch of potential subjects and to Damion for pointing out that you can turn it on its head and make it ironic. With the right caption you can do anything.

Other things spring to mind immediately: a local liquor store (puns are never a bad thing), an online community (like...erm, Filmwasters), a picture of your street, a local sports team, the site of a business which has gone under, a church, (god forbid....even a graveyard  :D)....come one, people... it ain't hard. You're all cleverer than I am. I will accept no excuses.

Francois: I'll take that Instax if you don't mind!

It's an abstract concept. Therefore, it's harder to realise than, say, "tall building" or "sunset". It's probably even more difficult as, for the majority of us, our "communities" extend only as far as our immediate family and, just occasionally, something that we see in our own towns or on holiday.

I really like the idea of abstract concepts as subject matter as it makes you think outside what is in front of you. However, I've got very limited time to do anything as I'm spending a ridiculous amount of time at work and this weekend I'm off to Bruges for a corporate jolly and I might be struggling to get the film processed and scanned for the deadline.

I was thinking last night about how many puns on 'spirit' one could get into a single photo. I ended up with a mental image of someone standing in a graveyard drinking a glass of brandy/rum/whiskey/vodka whilst talking to a ghost (who is also drinking).

As you can see, I'm keeping this one simple and straightforward. Like "Doors".

Erin, great stuff. Old work is fine by us; there's no need to shoot something new if an old images happens to fit the brief. We just want to see interesting interpretations of the theme.

I have finally sorted my contribution out too. I had a couple of standby images ready just in case, but I bagged a goodie today so I'm going with that.

Thanks to all the people who have sent work in already. It's great to see a few early birds.

So why hasn't the collab been posted yet?

Thanks - as always - to Sean for his supportive nudging  ;) I was away in Norway in the Service of Rock until late on Saturday and have been playing catch up since then. Should have some time to get it posted today.

The main point however, is that we've had a fantastic response to this theme and there will 23 or 24 photos in the gallery. Thanks everyone for contributing and making this one a big success. I'll lock this thread and start a new one when the gallery's finally online.
