One-off Printing Options
« on: August 17, 2011, 04:40:03 PM »
So im thinking of printing up some of my stuff, frame it and bung it in a shop on the off chance it sells.   not going for top dollar stuff....more cheapish  -just to test the water.

As some of it will be Pola Neg scans etc  - wondering how best to print?

Any idea?  I dont realy own a working printer  (i.e i do own an Epson R2400 - but ive not used it in a year and want to get rid of it - money for a new computer etc)

Any suggestions etc ....

Andrea.

I'm in a similar boat, peeps want prints (12x10) from Polas and Image Transfers I've done and I just put them off while I shoot more stuff..   ::)

Need to either buy a good secondhand printer (which I know nothing about) or someone cheap to produce but good quality...

The usual City shops i.e. Metro/Bayeux will kill me...

Photobox hey....!

I think damion if you are looking at framing the print
I would expect the price of the print wont be the
worrying factor as the frame and mount can be quite expensive.

If they are going to be limited or one off prints then you can command
a higher price for them and number them 1/25 or 1/100 people will
value it more if they know its limited.

A photographer friend has recommended the print space http://www.theprintspace.co.uk/ I've not got around to trying them yet but the prices don't look too bad.

I've used photobox for colour and black and white prints and been quite happy.

They use fuji crystal archive paper.  I always worry about the colour fastness and longevity of printer inks.

Unless you want prints on specialist papers (watercolour for example) I personally would go for those based on tried and tested photographic principals.

Incidentally, I found that it was cheaper to order prints from the likes of photobox than make them yourself on an printer.

Printer ink still costs too much. And unless you have a fully color profiled workflow, you may as well be playing darts blindfolded.

I second the external lab thing when it comes to color work.

Although I've never used, someone also recommended printspace to me.
Photobox prints are amazing quality for the price you pay!

I've been through this process over the past few years as I've exhibited and sold a few prints. As others point out, the cost of a decent printer and inks isn't worth it if your print run is small and infrequent. I have an old Epson 220 for the odd A4 and smaller colour print for home use, although at c 5p a print the online mainstream labs are excellent and I put in a few arty shots for proofs to the family print order. I've found Snapfish to be really good, I preferred the look of the prints to Photobox. Advance bulk purchase of a specific size, eg 500 6x4's really brings the price down and you can then use up your stock as time permits.

B+W magazine issue 112 (June 2010) ran no winners/no losers comparison article on various print companies which also contained some good advice. Here are my edited highlights
- if the print will be framed then semi-gloss to matt finishes are better at reducing flare
- the quality of the C-type prints were universally great (less so from SnappySnaps) and cheaper, if the print will be permanently framed (you lose some of the physical nature of giclee papers behind glass)
- c-type has a more limited paper range (usually fuji gloss, semi gloss, matt or metallic) and the paper is thinner
- giclee (inkjet) prints have wider ranges of different physical qualities in the papers - baryta, rag, etc etc - and have thicker paper which feels better as a finsihed print

carrying on...I've just got the sample pack from The Print Space which I can recommend as a really good way to see and feel the different paper qualities. Here are the websites of the companies that were reviewed, quality all v good with a few comments:

www.theprintspace.co.uk - best overall, their website is great with how to video tutorials
www.palmlabs.co.uk - multiple print deals
www.digitalarte.co.uk - pricey but excellent quality
www.the-darkroom.co.uk - multiple print deals
www.focalpointimaging.net - good at maximising paper size/print layout to lower costs and good customer service
www.digitalab.co.uk - multiple print deals, panoramic prints

I'm going with either the print space (london) or focal point (exeter) to see what they are like.

I hope this is useful.

I also created a spreadsheet for print costs and sales - if anyone is interested I am happy to share it by email. You type in your costs and print prices and it will work out your potential profit and margins on your sales. It even deducts commission! Home made but works OK  :)

I can recommend these Ikea Ribba frames - they're pretty cheap, nice quality and deep set so look great for exhibition quality prints. I buy loads of them actually and I loathe Ikea usually.

http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/products/20078333#/10161851/

Good array of size options and I love that they do a small and large square size, the small one will fit a 5x5 inch square photo (the mount supplied fits perfectly) so very handy for square shooters like me.

another great place for frames is Dunelm Mill if you are near one.  I picked up a load of 16x20 black ash types for about 6 quid each.  they are quite fragile though.

There's one of those places near my sister's house, I'll have to pop in and get some.

If you're lucky enough to have a Habitat closing down sale around the corner ( ;D) they have lovely frames going half price. A shame I will have to sell them on but look fab (aluminus range)

Photo box provide the back end for other photo retailers such as bootsphoto.

So you may have used them if you've order prints on the web from somewhere like this.

I came across photbox when they were the back end for Jacobsprints.

snapfish are a similar organisation, I think.

If you've got a voucher no excuse not to give them a try.

Over the years I have used Jessops for prints I have given to friends. I have to say I was very impressed with the quality. The size they will print to will possibly be  something of an issue though. I think the largest I was able to go to was a 10X10 print.

Anyway, I need to try some of the other cheap options. I keep getting those Photobox vouchers as well!

Well, if you don't mind having the image printed as a poster instead of making a photographic print, I know www.shortrunposters.com can print an 18x24 poster for dirt cheap... I still haven't put them to the test so I really don't know how good they are.

Karl - I'd appreciate it you'd report back on 'the print space' if you use them I've got a few prints I'm planning to send to them.

I also buy the IKEA Ribba black frames I think the quality isn't bad for the price, they also do a good size (400mm from memory) square version which is handy.

those prints are about £1.20 each 8x8" matt,  colours good, feels like a nice quality print.

I dont really have anything to compare against...but im happy with it!!

my only issue with stuff like this is, you cant get away from the fact its an online printed photograph.  I would love to find something a step up, that screams quality...whilst all the time being a rock bottom price ha ha

But the good thing with online printing is that the machines should be calibrated to sRGB which makes things easier.

I recently read that almost all screens, digicams and printers are moving to this profile. It's good enough for something like 95% of all images (having problems mostly with the turquoise waters of Fiji and Lake Louise Canada). So, it's very likely that finding a pro lab wouldn't do much better quality than the cheap shop.
