New Section - Photo Essays.
« on: July 28, 2011, 11:09:16 PM »
Got an itch to write? Got a series of five or more photographs? Then - after a few comments on another thread too - we've created a new section called Photo Essays.  So, feel free to give us a story, long or short, with accompanying photographs (film as always of course). Its about the words and the photographs. A documentary essay? A social commentary? A trip report? Anything I suppose with a subject other than photography itself. Enjoy!

I've moved a couple of my earlier posts to start, and if there's some others out there, please feel free to drop me a note...

Thanks as always for the support and interest! Skorj.

What a fantastic idea Skorj.

I can only speak for myself but a lot of what I shoot is linked to events, places, trips out or things that "connect" it to an idea or an emotion I've been experiencing / working my way through. I think a lot of members will support this new section. Thanks for setting it up.

Must they include words?  Other than a title?

Great idea Skorj !

Just a question... how do I do to post more pictures like you did with yours? I'm only allowed 3 pics per post...Since it's a Photo Essay would be easier if we could post more than 3 pictures at once... :)

Yes! That's the 'essay' part, to put some context, explanation, story, around the photographs. Not just a plonked-up short gallery perhaps, but something to read and contemplate or provoke interest or thoughts. A magazine style entry, or a travelogue perhaps. Well... these are my ideas anyway.

how do I do to post more pictures like you did with yours? I'm only allowed 3 pics per post...Since it's a Photo Essay would be easier if we could post more than 3 pictures at once... :)

Indeed! You should use the 'in line' style of photograph presentation. Instead of the conventional forum 3x max up-loaded photographs (as most do for simple uploads). 'In line' style requires you to use an image hosting service (such as Flickr), grab the image URL and embed it in line with the text flow (not just tagged on the end like forum uploads). When composing a post, the little button with the landscape photograph above auto embeds this.

I have set up a dummy Fickle account to do just this. It is free, can host up to 200 photographs, and even has a nice <Capture URL> button to allow just this. Photographs uploaded to Fickle can still be linked (and show up here), but you cannot see them on your own Fickle page. Photobucket, and others also have a similar linking function. Set the image size to 750 pixels before upload, and you will get the full page width displayed if you use <Large Size> on Fickle in this case.

A simple example perhaps:

Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit. Sed sit amet risus sit amet tortor ullamcorper semper quis fringilla sem. Vivamus vel tristique risus. Etiam aliquet libero in orci iaculis molestie. Pellentesque habitant morbi tristique senectus et netus et malesuada fames ac turpis egestas.

[ img]insert image URL from Fickle [/img]

Nam scelerisque risus in mauris scelerisque nec varius tortor vestibulum. Suspendisse in velit enim. Fusce dapibus condimentum mauris. Mauris nec risus dui. Vestibulum eu sapien nec nulla posuere fermentum. Class aptent taciti sociosqu ad litora torquent per conubia nostra, per inceptos himenaeos.

[ img]insert image URL from Fickle [/img]

Phasellus ultrices ornare nunc, non auctor arcu condimentum in. In hac habitasse platea dictumst. Etiam porta mattis urna eget sollicitudin. Suspendisse egestas suscipit turpis sit amet dictum. Donec molestie facilisis sagittis.

Note the [img] tags should not include spaces, otherwise they will not work. These spaces have been added so you can see what they would look like before you hit the <Post> button. Others, with a more teachery style can perhaps elaborate. But, I hope this helps to start. Thanks. Skj.

Thanks for the clarification regarding words.  I asked because "photo essay" often refers to a story told through pictures, that the pictures carry the narrative.

Thanks for the instructions, Skorj. I have just tried this, like I do every week with the weekend photos and it never  works. All that gets uploaded is the url of the image.  I have checked all my flickr settings and can see nothing that should prevent it, but, it doesn't work. Could it be something within my profile at Filmwasters? You know, an admin setting? Unless of course I am missing something.

Should not be an admin function! A Fickle URL should look like this:

http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6024/5966024695_925a8ae9f2_z.jpg

When you right-click, and <Copy Image Location>? Your Fickle stream seems to have this turned off perhaps to stop this function? You then paste between the two image tags created when you hit the button. What do your Fickle URLs look like?

Your blog URLs look like this:
http://terrorkitten.com/iblog/images/20110725154409_comanche%20tx%20110310%20usa%20hasselblad%20160vc%20010%20010.jpg

and when I hit the button I get this:
[ img][/img]

and I then paste the above URL between the 'IMG' tags and I get this:

Love this idea Skorj and saw the new forum for essays. I have always wanted to do one, especially on the Mexican horseman who live in this area. They always dress so well and love their horses very much and take great pride in taking care of them and riding them. Who knows, this might just help me get up the nerve to approach the family living across Ave O from me.  ;D ???

Great Idea,

A new craft brewery has just set up shop locally and I was thinking about seeing if I could get in and take few photo's.  This might just be the incentive I need to approach the owner, might have to try the brew as well mind you.

Hi Andrea, that link to YouTube appears to be for a non-public video, so it won't work anyway. Also, if you wanted to post a link to a YouTube video you'd need to use a slightly different format of link. Here's the post that dexcribes video embedding on Filmwasters: http://www.filmwasters.com/forum/index.php?topic=3795.0

...none of which addresses why you'd want to embed videos in a photo essays thread, but since you are who you are, I suspect there's a good reason, so I'll watch this space.
