oddly enough, the iphone camera does something pretty similar. if you are speeding along (like, in a train), the closer something is to the camera, the more slanted it is. i'd post an example but it's digital!

i understand how the iphone camera does this, but how does it work on a normal film camera? i've never seen this sort of thing on film stills before

From memory there's another Lartigue shot of his brother in a cart which has a similar effect...perhaps even more pronounced. I will go and hunt it down.

I've noticed the same thing with my Droid phone when I move the camera, e.g., snapping while walking. I think it's simply a matter of movement of the camera relative to the subject while the shutter is open -- taken to an extreme with camera tossing.

A Graflex SLR is another camera on my want list. I'm hoping to get one before the end of the summer to shoot the remainder of my Polaroid 4x5 film.

What a great story!!! I remember seeing the original image in my history of photography class. I love that the seller worked so hard to recreate that image and did such a fantastic job of it!
