8x10 "The Box Camera"
« on: May 16, 2011, 05:21:42 PM »
This is the box used to take my previous posting "The boathouse". I found a two-piece box and covered it with gaffer tape. The pinhole was taped inside and a cardboard flap acted as the shutter. After loading a single sheet in the darkroom, the box was taped to prevent light leaks. Being too flimsy to attach to a tripod, the contraption was balanced on an aluminium ladder and steadied with a garden broom. (Mr. Heath Robinson would have been impressed!).

Regards,

Lawrie.

I've made paper negative box cameras before but NEVER gotten the great results you got here! It's amazing how sharp that image is.

Very nice.
If you want to make it "tripod compatible", you could go to the hardware store and ask for something called a Tee Nut. All you would need to do is drill a right sized hole in a plank of wood, hammer this in, cover the top with a glued on piece of scrap wood or cardboard and glue the whole set on the bottom of the box.

Here's a picture of the fastener from BoltDepot.com
The image tells the whole story.

The size of all tripod screws is 1/4-20
1/4 inch diameter, 20 threads per inch.

I am currently shooting paper negatives. Arista Grade II - developed in highly diluted paper developer.

I've always wanted to have a go at something like this but not having a darkroom was an issue. Then I saw Leon's Paterson whirly thing on the last video podcast and all my problems were answered! I'm going to give this a go.

You can also use a color print drum. They can be handled in full daylight, just need a rolling surface to work and use very little chemistry. My cibachrome drum can do 11x14 with only 3oz of chemistry.
