Help! Which do you prefer?
« on: May 12, 2011, 09:06:33 PM »
I don't usually have any doubt about how I want an image to look but I've cogitated this one for long enough and can't decide. So which, if any, do you prefer?

I like the higher contrast of the second image myself.

I concur.  The second is more punchy but the firs more believable if that makes sense - somewhere in between would add that little artistic flair without being too direct.

I appreciate you asked 1 or 2 so if you choose to ignore the above its one for me :)

i like the tones in the first one more.  2nd one seems too dark... at least on my monitor.

First one - but with a vignette on the sky more in keeping with the second (i.e. not just dark corners). Both are lovely, though....

Thanks for all the replies. Really has helped. It seems the answer is somewhere in between.

The first one is the one I did first but, probably because I wasn't entirely happy with it, I fiddled a bit more and came up with the second one. But maybe I overdid it and need to back off a bit. I'll see what I can do.

Paul, The vignettiing was natural and wasn't an added extra by me. It's more obvious in the second because of the higher contrast and generally darker tones. I need to investigate it because I wasn't previously aware this lens vignetted that much. Maybe it was wide open: I don't record stuff like that. Personally, I prefer the vignetting in the first but I like the higher contrast of the foreground, so I'm with Jonas I guess.

Here's attempt three.

I decided I didn't like the vignetting in the corners and, in fact, in the original it's not that noticeable. It was made more obvious because I had increased the contrast in the sky to try to bring out the single white cloud (and failed). So I did a bit of jiggery-pokery so that I could increase the contrast in the sky without increasing the vignetting. I also darkened the foreground a bit to increase the contrast in that area. I think this is more what I was aiming for in the first place. Thanks again for the comments.

Bingo, shout 'house' for me...

The vignetting did nothing for the image imho...

Perfect. Such a classic shot, a nice, even tonal gradation across the sky really suits it - and I love the solitary cloud.

oh! that looks worlds better Peter. haha, not saying that the others are bad but this third attempt has a much more calm feeling to it. a vignetting pushing the eye into the middle of a shot can be effectfull but for this toning it down was good I think. I'm sure this would looks good big, like a meter wide or so :)
