Castle Stalker - opinions sought

Now it's someone elses turn - who'll take the challenge first???

I visited Oban on the west coast of Scotland last September. We went to Castle Stalker one morning at 5.30am for dawn (my friend is a colour slide person). I took a number of rolls and found it hard to stop taking pictures!

Here are my 2 favourite ones. Personally I prefer the first one but which one do you like?

Yes, I prefer the first one too FWIW. It really says something while the other is rather like i would do and has no heart.

I'd have to say number 2. It has a sublrty of light that No 1 doesn't. The foreground rock is too dominant in No 1 and competes too much with the castle. Both are great images and always difficult to compare same or similiar shots as it becomes a preference thing as opposed to telling a little more about the story of Castle Stalker from a different perspective if you know what I mean. Certainly worth getting up for!

dave - I've got to agree with you - I like the competition for dominance between rock and castle, and, it's hard to tell from the jpg, but it seems that the castle is soft and the rock infocus?  if so, I like tht even more, makes the castle more unreal.  That said, if I hadnt seen number 1 then I'd REALLY like number 2

I like the second one.  The more gradual change of focus from foreground to subject then background is smoother and really makes my eye wander in and out of the photo more.

They each are great in their own way, but #2 gets the wall hanger.

Like the mood you have created in both images.  The  first is my favourite, its a well  balanced  image and the reflections in the water are more detailed. The placement of the large rock also adds interest. The vignetting at the bottom of the image helps hold in the water and again is nicely balanced

Both very nice images but prefer the first one by a way...I love the stone in the foreground and there is beautiful detail both in it and the water.

#1 definitely does it for me but they are both strong images.

Both are excellent but I prefer No.1 just by a wee bit ;)

Both of these are way better than all the touristy crap I have seen, I'm originally from this area!
