Scanning old slides a few months ago, I've been slowly processing the scans. Memories. From this:

Came this:

About 1978, and I think it would have been Ilford tranny, though I cannot remember the type. ISO50 perhaps? How about you? Old tools, old film, old memories? See ya! Skj.

looks like a ricoh auto half? something I'd like~ there's a cute commercial for that one, though deleted on youtube that ended with a girl saying "Kore dake yo", wich means "Its just like this" and then *SNAP*
btw, that's a really nice shot you've got

on to the memories bit.. since I got my new scanner I've gotten to know my girlfriends relatives on a whole new scale! recently one of them had their 60th birthday so everyonr got together gathering old photos for a photobook something along the lines with; this is your life. it was a joy seeing all the formats, colour as black and white, seeing people as young and old... life is quite a marvel.

I'm glad you started this Skorj... a long time ago I broght some negs from Brazil to scan but never had the chance. Although most of them are still with my parents, these are a few I could scan... the others are really bad or the pics are poorly taken.

Excellent stuff - great idea for a thread Skj. I'm a child of the 70's - throughout the 80s and 90s I'd look at pics from back then and really notice how old fashioned everyone looked. Now I look and think how modern people look ... is that an age thing, or have fashions just gone full circle???

I used to have a beetle too Skorj, let me guess the year 1960-61? I have some old family shots some from 1910 ish this one is my great grandfather and my grandfather with valve radio 1930s.

Volker, wonderful vacation shots. You both do look very cold!

This is one of my favorite shots from when I was a kid and just got my Pentax. I still use that Pentax today. I think I was 17 or 18 when I took this. I dont recall how I got black and white film or who processed it but I think back then, the mid 80's, real black and white film could be purchased at grocery stores and most corner labs could process it. Anybody remember the little drive and walk up film lab kiosk like places? They used to be all over the place. I think they must be extinct now.

Anyway, these were some of the guys I used to hang out with. My boyfriend at the time is in the middle, with both hands out. I suppose they were a rough crowd, though I didnt know it at the time.

I went through the family archives and found some gloriously old stuff.
And this is just a drop in the bucket... there's a ton more where this came from!

First one is my great grandfather (the one in the middle) and his brothers at their general store in 1902.

Second one is from when they had visitors from the States... and everyone in the village were going out with their horses and buggies to see an auto-mobile... wow!

Third is my great aunt in front of the boat that seems to wonder why row? She passed away last year at 99 years old!

Fourth is the first trip to New York for my grandpa and grandma (the two on the left). Just next to them is the girl on the boat who seems to really appreciate posing next to a nice car

That hand colored shot is fantastic! I have never tried hand coloring but it has a long history and I really enjoy it so I might just give it a try some day.

Francois, your family images are so fantastic I could stare at them for hours just soaking in all the details. Not only are they from a long time ago, but of a different country. I find them endlessly fascinating, especially the general store shot. There is so much to look at. Seems like there have been photogs in your family for a long time, eh?

The lady on the right is an aunt of my wife's, it was recently her 90th birthday and I was asked to do a renovation job on it and get it printed - they were dead chuffed!

I think photography is in the blood of a few in my family. On my mom's side, it was my grandfather who was the real camera buff. I still have his Leica

My mom had an uncle who worked as a product photographer for a large department store...
On my dad's side, there's only one photographer who migrated to Manchester with a part of the family who went to work in the cotton mills.

The coolest one so far has to be Francois' great grandfather hanging out on the front step of the store. Makes me sort of want to be there.

Here's a photo of some of my mother's family. The little baby on the old gentleman's lap (he's my great-grandfather) is my aunt, who later became quite a successful portrait photographer. I inherited an album of old family photos and a few years ago scanned some of them to send to the cousins. Thinking I should get back to it and get some better quality scans.

Well, I haven't had time to dig up the snaps I wanted to, but here are a few from (West) Germany back in December 1975. My Dad's parents were over from Blighty visiting for Christmas. The black and white snap of my dad & Grandmother at the Mohne Dam has been converted in PS from the original colour because the quality was awful. These slides are in appalling condition in general and lots of dirt had to be cloned out to get them looking even this good.

Wow! I had intended this to just be you and your old photographs, but it seems to have grown. Great stuff. Going over old stuff was fun at this end too. I found what I think was a daguerreotype from about 1850 to 1880. Seems great grandmother & father were quite 'well off', and could afford such luxuries.

The "Instant" photo with the church on the background is grandpa and grandma (on the left), I say instant because the photographer would take the picture and develop straight away inside the camera !

Did some scanning at work yesterday (whilst samples were chugging through the analyser) - memories from when I raced
