similar photographers to Aliki Braine?
« on: January 06, 2011, 01:39:06 PM »
Hi,

does anyone know other photographers who obstruct their photographs - or use a lot of black/white/grey areas in their work.

All I can think of are Aliki Braine and Lisa Oppenheim.

Thanks in advance.

there is a recent book published by roth called "Killed: Rejected Images of the Farm Security Administration" that features punched negs from the 30s. already climbing in price on amazon, but there are still some online shops that have it for $75.

censorship aside - there's a long history of this starting with the constructivists (specifically Rodchenko), bauhaus photographers and photomontage artists using both re-appropriated imagery and their own work.  Some did it for purely 'artistic' purposes, some to give an entirely different socio-political meaning to the base image.

The examples you have are cut-outs against a background that shows through the photo, rather than something on the image surface obstructing the image.

The publisher of "Killed...," a small art book press in NYC, is selling them for a third of amazon's price:
