Gregor, Holy Shmoly!!! What a mysterious scene you've created. I feel like I've been transported back to the days of old when magic filled the world. Wow!!!

Here is my contribution. TIP PX600 UV shot with a folding SX70 and a NV (?) filter over the lens. I really like the blown out look I get from shooting the 600 in the SX70 with filter.

Oh yeah, and in case anybody is wondering what that is in the picture, its a dead Joshua tree.

This is a great w/e thread, no matter what the day might be. Andrea's snow-bunny cloud and Nigel's #15 stick in my mind's eye.

Here are three from a roll of tri-x exposed in a 2x3 roll film back on my crown graphic and developed, yesterday in Xtol. I used a 90mm angulon for the sleeping hound and a 210mm sironar for the others. The culvert photo was made last spring but the other two were made yesterday.

Some beautiful work (as ever)

Andrea - the desolate beauty of that place is drawng me in. I adore those clouds.
Phil - lovely colours and very....."phallic" symbolism. (Can I say "symbolism" here....?)
Aoluain - stunning montage. Looks like a cold walk. Love the gull crashing into the lamp.
Nigel - that second shot is just amazing. Timed to perfection
Gregor - just beautiful shots. The first is my favourite, though...
Mojave - trees (dead or naked) are one of my fave subjects. I'm starting shooting with my SX-70 in the new year.
Blaxton - great work but Ivy is just gorgeous and the Milkweed is almost 3-D

My own submissions are cliched, I'll admit, but I do love this part of the world. Taken on HP5+ using my trusty Nikon F5 and 70-300mm VR (hand held) I'm quite pleased with the end result on a very dark / flat lit day.

~~Christmas~~ Yesterday. The beach was inaccessible. Too much ice and short of sliding all the way down and spending the next few days waiting for the thaw, we came home via The Crofter http://islandcrofters.blogspot.com/2010/12/161.html. Or did we go via The Crofter? Who knows?

Hope everybody had a great holiday. Great work from everybody as usual, different cameras, film formats and style but always a pleasant output.

I went to Granada two weeks ago and in one of the Alhambra patios I took, completely by chance. a picture from each of the sides, that you could almost superimpose. I only took one film shot of each side and I wasn't really planning on this, so I was really happy when I saw the final result. I was just trying to align things normally as I am pretty bad when it comes to framing the shot.

Isn't 800Z discontinued now or is that just the 120 version? I tried to get some a month or two back and ended up with Portra 800 - which is nice but I don't think it can live with the Fuji version - then again, I like blue/green.....

i wish i could still get it on 120/220 but even the expired on ebay has risen way too much now...real shame.

Hi Vicky.

Well, that's market forces for you...! If anyone studying economics needed an object lesson in the effect scarcity can have on price, all they need to do is look at the price of film now that film photography is having a resurgence in popularity at the same time that manufacturers are pulling some product lines.

Anyway, I've finally gone and done it. I know it's no big deal in the great scheme of things but, after miles of fruitless trekking all over London today (Silverprint in Waterloo to West End Cameras on Tottenham Court Road, via John Lewis and Boots on Oxford Street) I finally managed to get some TIP PX100 "Silver Shade" for my newly-acquired SX-70.

Here's my very first shot with it. It was pin sharp in the viewfinder but it was shot in fairly dim indoor lighting. This is a shot of my Voigtlander Perkeo I with a few minor tweaks in Photoshop - mostly to get rid of the detritus (I really must clean my scanner out soon....!!)

LD, I have lots of experience with this film and what it looks like to me in this shot is that maybe too much light got to the image within the first 10 secs after being ejected, though I could be wrong. I see this exact thing though when I dont cover the image properly when it comes out of the camera. I keep a small sheet of black poster paper with me and hold it in my right hand and as soon as I press the shutter and start to hear the film being ejected, I turn away from the light and put that black poster board over the end of the camera. Easy to do and works most of the time. What light leaks I do get I have so far been pretty happy with.

Hi Mojave.

Having read some of the advice here and elsewhere, I kept the silver foil lined inner box and, as soon as the print was ejected, I put it face down into the foil box and pointed it away from the light source.

Given that the 8 shot box of film cost £21, I am loathe to experiment. However, I will take a couple of shots in daylight tomorrow at "average" light settings. That said, the photos are meant to be taken and developed at around 17-24 degrees Celsius. This means we will, almost certainly, NEVER get a correctly developed TIP photo in the UK as those temperatures only exist briefly during a particularly hot, British summer.

Here's hoping for an extreme dose of global warming. Bugger the planet, I want value for my money.....!!

LOL! I can totally relate.

I find that too much light hits the image transferring it to the box, even if I cover it with my hand. So I cover it with the poster board right as it comes out and hold it there for a bit, like to a count of thirty, then transfer the image to the box with the poster board still covering it. And, uh, the box? Well, its usually tucked into my pants.

It gets cold here too and I cant NOT shoot this film while its cold, so yeah, that foil lined box the film came in resides in my pants, against the skin, until I get into the car. Fun stuff. Works though. The pic of the dead joshua tree was taken in about 45 degree temps.

Another thing I have found is that the arm pit doesnt work so well, even if you put the print in the box and put the box in your pit. Its just too warm a place and the print comes out all orange.

Cheers Mojave and thanks for the additional info on "techniques".

Mind you, I'm struggling to get the thought of you taking - and then stuffing - Polaroid photos down your crotch which - seemingly - is considerably cooler than up your armpit - out of my head. I do, however, bow down to your sense of scientific experimentation. Fox-Talbot would be a proud (and probably confused) man if he were alive today.

It's almost worth the exorbitant price of a box this film to see which part of the body (keep the suggestions clean, please) can provide just the right level of warmth / humidity to optimise the development process.

Further scans will follow and I shall consider putting up a prize for anyone who can guess where the photo was "stored" whilst developing.

I'm starting to see the reasons for the resurgence in popularity of the SX-70. It'll be a sort of pity if TIP ever manages to stabilise and standardise the quality of this film.....

And Phil, I dont think you're asking too much and I do think they will get it more stable before too long. The UV versions are much better than the regular silver shade as far as predictability goes over all, but you still have to cover the film as soon as it comes out of the camera and it is very temp sensitive. I just dont have any issues with that myself. Not sure why, but then you know what they say about love being blind.

Guys.

Maybe it's the fact that I spent 6 years as a product manager trying to make sure that what we sold was fit for purpose and consistent. Maybe it's also because of my frugal northern genes - but little frustrates me more than paying serious amounts of dosh for something I can only trust to be consistently inconsistent, at best. That is a novelty that soon wears off with me.

It's not that I "crave" reliability and predictability, I "expect" it from something for which I'm asked to stump up a super-premium price. Mr Kaps, if he has any sense, will want success for his company - not disappointed, one-time, customers who step up, try the film and never come back.

I've entered this part of the photographic sector in a relatively low budget manner because there's no way on this little green and blue planet that I'd pay the sort of price TIP is asking for reconditioned Polaroid cameras - with, or without, a guarantee. Having seen what was possible with proper Polaroid film, it would be a shame if TIP and whoever else enters the market, don't try to make their product more usable and "the project" a bit less "impossible".

Now then, where did I stash that print......

I rounded off 2010 by delveloping a batch of C41 films, a job which I had to keep putting off for months. It's been a very thin year for me for various reasons but I was at least hoping for a few pleasant suprises from these 8 or so films. I should have known better

A few films were shot in a mutilated Vivitar UW&S left over from a wide aperture mod experiment the results of which totally failed to impress. Trouble was I didn't spot this and shot away several rolls over several months, resulting in loads of over exposed and out of focus snaps.

Another was a roll of very expired, really crap cheap ISO400 print film which for some reason I'd loaded into my ME Super and then forgotton it was in there. Horrible results.

The next was a roll of 120 which I'd loaded into a Diana clone which I'd forgotton had an out of focus central area and was sharper at the edges. Damn.

Last but not least, a year or so ago I added some black tape to the frame edges of a matchbox pinhole camera just to get straight edges for a change rather than the usual ragged cardboard frame edge. The tape came unstick inside the camera obscuring big chunks of the frame. Rather than do sensible thing and dispose of the camera, I put it to one side ensuring that I would use it again this year... and then reload it for yet another roll! Lightleaks, happy accidents etc I can cope with. Two more totally ruined rolls I can't!

I can't put any of these mistakes down to technical faults or bad luck - it's all down to my own stupidity. Just got to make sure 2011 isn't like this - to start with at least it's going to be one camera, one roll at a time - less room for "senior moments"!!!

Al: Welcome back to Filmwasters and - it would seem - to Filmwasting!!

Sorry to be a smart ar*e, because I do genuinely feel your pain. I have 20+ rolls of 35mm C41 in the fridge waiting for me to destroy with my first few forays into colour processing and I have no idea which camera I used, what the conditions were, what I was aiming for...they're just a bunch of films (or "JABOF" as I like to call them*).

The films I've shot recently I have started to annotate (e.g. "Cornwall Dec 2010. Old tin mine") because it could be another 2 years before I get round to processing them. I think, however, I'll take your advice to heart once I've caught up, and process as soon as I shoot...or at least before switching to another camera.

Finally, I didn't know you had an ME Super. Sweet So do I. I'm slowly working my way through the K mount back catalog (P30T, Super A, Program A, ME Super) and the ME is my current squeeze. I love it....mind you, I loved all the others too, they just fell apart on me. Maybe I should just buy a K1000 and be done with it. Everyone I know who's owned one of them seems to have had it for 30 years at least.

Taken today in a small Suffolk village. These are from my first pack of TIP PX100. I am not exactly proficient yet and the results seem extremely variable - but I think you can just about make out that these are in a church / graveyard...
