Weekend Thread - November 19th -22nd
« on: November 19, 2010, 01:57:14 PM »
Here comes the weekend........

I'll kick off with a few from my recent walk down London's "south bank" near Waterloo. This is a nice place when the weather's fine but miserable as hell when it's cold, wet and windy. Shots taken with Canon F1-N, FD 20-35mm f3.5L and FL 58mm f1.2 - using Kodak Portra 800. Scanned on Epson V750 and processed via Lightroom 2.

A slightly whimsical one from me:
Taken early morning on an Ensign Selfix 1620 folder, APX 100.

There's more to this photography thing than meets the eye.

Phil - I love the colour in your first shot, there's nothing like a bit of peeling paint!

I'm still way behind on my scanning, these are from my trip to Portland in September. Unfortunately it didn't have the date of the picture in the first shot but it looks like the 50's, maybe.

Some slides arrived by post the other day. I was a bit confused at first but when I looked I noticed they were from a Holiday in August 09. I bought some Boots slide film, £1/roll processing paid. I remember sending this off and not getting it back, chasing it up at the time but not getting an outcome - what a nice surprise it was having them turn up more than a year later  :)

Taken on a Canon 1000fn now passed on to eldest son.

Here's a shot of an old railway station in my town that's no longer in use but mysteriously kept quite clean.  A ghostly janitor?  Normally it's hard to see inside, but the other day as I was heading for the train I saw the shaft of light inside and snapped this picture.

Photo Utopia - fabulous timing. "Duck Suicide Pact" would make a great title. Love the Rollei shot, too....

Hookstrapped - I adore gig shots and these are crackers - but the last one is a star performer.

Phil - I am a Hasselnerd by comparison. Don't know how you do it but don't stop. That second shot of the chair is just awesome.

Nigel - a concrete elephant in a park. Very cool. Very surreal.

Suzi - you are also predictable. I keep predicting you'll post fabulous shots and you never fail.

Diane - superb shot with a fantastic sky.

Miller - glad you like the shot of the walkway. Your shot of the Ford Galaxie is glorious.

Urban - Food? Yum...! Mind you, the book shot is my fave.

Andrea - Uig is a magical place. I loved my trip up there recently and a bit of me remains. Stunning shots.

Windy - Red "Routemaster" buses are so evocative of my youth. Love the "stairway to heaven" as we used to call is when we went upstairs with our girlfriends....

Terry - what tones. Just beautiful - really beautiful.

LD – that first one is exhilarating!

Photo_Utopia – I love, love that capture of the duck-butts!  Makes me smile from the inside out.  And I want that apothecary chest - - I have an old library file drawers in which I store my polaroids – LOVE all the little drawers 

Phil – I love them both but holy-smokin-goodness: that b/w is a stunner - - I just love the tones and the ‘apparition’ in the water puddle!!!

Suzi – holga-yum!

Urbanhafner – I’ve never shot 400H – those colors are drop-dead gorgeous!  Your wife is very lucky to have you as her photographer!  …. And perhaps also as her taste-tester?

Miller – niiiice!

Windy – the red is gorgeous!

Terry – lovely light

LD - i like the third one, somewhat for colors, but mostly because the center tree divides it so nicely it makes me think its different steps of the same person

hookstrap - in my past i shot alot of music acts, i'm curious on your equipment/materials?

phil - i agree with ann, that bwcn is freakin unreal!

miller - i think your goop works wonderfully to give that ford some motion

windy - diggin' the kite for its simplicity and color contrast

terry - i looked at your image a couple of times trying to decide why i liked it, i decided the repetition of verticals.

got my projector out at took some digys of chromes for this week.  didn't make it out to develop yet again, although i'm working through my e6 and kodachrome so i feel relieved that i did shoot this week.

for this week:  some lips, a yawn, and a frame number zero

Engineer fixed my home broadband this morning so I can keep up with the weekend thread - hurrah..

Awesome work as always, very inspiring. FW polaroid work is so interesting and the one medium I don't experiment with, am wondering whether I should have a go. Tempting.

Windy - love the red bus shot!

Food photography.. yum..

Photo Utopia - very nice shot

Terry - love the mood in there..

Right, back for another look..  :)

Love the band shots hookstraped. And Phil, you're so predictable. At least one photo each week. ;)

Ann, I think I'm the one that's lucky. I get to taste all the food :) And of course, whoa! That was a response to the photos that I didn't expect. The vegetarian chili with vermicelli noodles that I photographed today didn't turn out that well, but I think I can post the photos here anyway ;)

thanks Ann!  I was lucky to find it off a local classifieds site and it turns out from someone I know casually. Odd life coincidences.  He had no idea of ebay prices. He also had in tow a Hasselblad CFE 120 f/4 he was selling to someone else.  Tough times for pro photographers in Seattle... That's pretty much like a carpenter selling their hammer & drill...

i converted another polaroid j33 because i wasn't happy with the last. took some test shots this weekend using the color filter and fuji fp-100c. i still have to add a few "aesthetic touches" but it works really well. will take it to palm springs with me next week and blog it all eventually.

Some more stonkingly good images....

Gregor - your Hassy print is just sublime. I love the black cat and the guy in the hat is probably about to get a rude awakening...!! Congrats on the Pola 665 too. Nice to catch a bargain from time to time  ;)

Windy - it's clearly a week for animals made out of random materials. Wooden sheep? Nice photos though - must get up to Stornoway next time we're up there. The black puddin' is also a big draw....

Phil - How do you get those tones / contrast? Seriously, I've used a fair few rolls of BWCN and, as much as I like it, I've also ended up with some fairly "harsh" looking negs.

Moominsean - gorgeous colours.

Harvey - I am a big "heavy horse" fan and, you're right, the people who judge 'em, use 'em and sell 'em are also great characters to be around.

Another great weekend thread and more to come, I'm sure....

I find myself able to contribute here for the second week in a row. A fact almost as miraculous as Gregor's 665 score  ;)

I have the Tachihara set up on a tripod in the kitchen from last weekend still when Leon came to visit. The kids have gotten so good at moving around the rig like it wasn't there that I've stopped telling them to watch out for Daddy's camera. This morning, Joe (aged 3), was trying to get at it and kept saying, "Too high! Too high!", but apart from that they ignore it.

I put a pinhole on it and took a few snaps. The breakfast pinhole (first photo) was around 15 minutes, the evening one (snap #2) more like 45. The whole family was in and around during the second shot. I was the only one left at the table for the first one.

Nice shots everybody, here are the ones I liked the best

Late developper, the first one is looking good, really like the wide angular perspective.
Phil, love that lonely chair.
Suzi, that first one is weet.. do not ask me why : )
Diane, lovely menacing mood
Windy, that staircase.. great light!
Noominsean, great hues in that first one.

From my side took the new car (toyota camry 1996) and went with Elena and Little Alma to the chinesse neighborhood that in comparison to other parts of the city looked like a nice place to walk, veeeerrrry interesting, I have to come back and again, as many possibilities and people are more or less friendly to be taken photos. After 3 hours we were really exhausted. AS the place is really NOISY, DIRTY, P-0-L-L-U-T-E-D.. we went to our favourite restaurant were little Alma was quickly ¨kidnapped¨ from our hands. Philippinos just LOVE babies  ;D

Well, I went out this afternoon with the Pentacon loaded with Portra NC for some magic hour shots.  (We've had some glorious sunsets lately.)  And, of course, the clouds came and no magic happened.  thankfully, I had the Exakta too, with half a roll of Delta 100...

Oooh, I like that, Terry. Great low contrast scene and such a strong yet unusual composition. I just try to think of clouds as big ND filters in the sky - that way I don't get mad when they screw up a perfectly good sunrise / sunset....

Carlos, what a great set of images. I'm positive that you'll come home from the Philippines with a truly strong body of work. The gritty b/w style seems to to suit the subject matter, but I'm sure you'll take great photos whichever setup you use. Young kids can certainly be an ice-breaker, can't they!

Ed, it's habit forming, you're almost a regular  ;D

Carlos, I'll second Ed's  words.

LD, I have never had any real problems with XP2 or BWCN, although oddly this last batch has driven me nuts at the scanning phase. I have no idea why and I won't embarrass myself here by telling you how much time I spent on that particular negative yesterday. Needless to say I was alone in the house and still unwashed come late afternoon! I  am pleased with the outcome though. Now, if I could only remember what I did.  :-[

Calbisu, those images are just brill. What technique are you using if you don't mind me asking?

I actually got into the darkroom again after a lay-off. Printed this pinhole on old Kodak Polyprint - sepia toned - from the croft. Taken with home-made pinhole holder box using GP3 film developed in Bromophen.

Thanks, Film Fellas, appreciated  ;D Truth is that I had not done street photography for a looooong time. In fact street photography is all what I was doing before going back to Spain two years ago. Anyway, I hope I will keep a balance now. Andrea, about the technique not much I can say. Shooting with a 35mm camera, Canon A1, sometimes on the ¨move¨ (walking and shooting), without much thinking about it, and using the 28mm that makes me go CLOSE to the subject!  :) As for the editing just ¨curves¨ with PS. I guess that looking at yamasaki ko-ji pics may hhave had some influence  ::)

There was a thread sometime ago (I kinda of remember) of why we shoot with Film. For me the answer is every time clearer. Digital is like having a white canvas, you just put the raw image there and that will be your starting point. You go to whatever photo-style you want. With film,  the act of photographing is by itself part of the photography art. The choice of the medium (camera and film) strongly dictates the results you will get... Well, this is what I was thinking the other day looking at my Canon 5D which I just don´t use anymore (and it´s a GREAT cameara).

Lovely work everyone guys !

Mark -  The Rollei shot it's wonderful... did you actually find the whole chemist shop or is it just one piece ? brilliant...
MIller - the polaroid effect added some sense of "speed" in you shot, love it...
Phill - Again... fantastic stuff !
Terry - Very atmospheric shot, well captured...
Gregor - wonder what was the cat planning to do... ;D
Ian - I love the Holga shots, and the locations are fantastic

Here are few more taken with the Pentax/Pentacon combo... nothing special, just a test.
