A funny thing happened.....
« on: November 01, 2010, 12:50:53 PM »
.....at the camera shop on Saturday.

I'd gone to pick up 7 or 8 rolls of 120 Fuji Acros 100 exposed on holiday in Skye, etc. I'd also taken a few rolls of 35mm B&W (of various types). Everything was fine but I was handed one roll back unprocessed as the lab my friend at the camera shop uses won't process Adox CHF films.

Now, I haven't used much of this stuff before and I do understand that it is temperature critical and, if it isn't done 100% correctly, the emulsion can be scratched, distort or even "lift" from the base. Is the lab over-reacting or is it best to avoid CHF unless you soup your own?

Any other films that come with a similar health warning....??

I've not heared of CHF so I'll presume you mean CHS Art. If so these films are made by EFKE in Zagreb Croatia. These films are thin emulsion types that haven't really changed that much since the 1950's.
The emulsion is a little more fragile than most modern film types like Kodak T-Max which have much harder gelatin, but with due care they should be OK.

I can understand your lab, if they are using T-Max RT developer at 25°C films like Across, T-Max and Delta will be fine, EFKE with traditional non hardened emulsion will be borderline.

If you want to see how good these films are then a Beutler type developer like Tetenal Neofin Blau will give very sharp results, Rodinal is also a good choice with the slower film 25&50 they can look bitingly sharp.

Sorry, yes it's CHS (my memory and my typing leave a bit to be desired....!!)

So, I suppose I need to start looking for a specialist who can process this in the appropriate soup and at a temperature that won't screw the emulsion.

Cheers. Paul.
