Nice idea. well put together. i can't imagine the sheer amount of film they must have used.
when they say they shot 35mm film in a 16mm movie camera it means the frames were 16x24 ? half-frame ?

It's an interesting idea, I did some movies on super 8 once. I have a Bolex 16mm but the cost of film and processing is too much.
16mm is smaller than half frame 35mm (movie standard) I think from memory it was 10mmx7mm or there about.
During my early phographic career I processed 16mm for the BBC, if anyone is interested here is a snap or two of the processor:

I just figured it out...

The images are all shot on a 35mm camera. Then the prints are sequenced and animated using the 16mm cine. Then everything is transferred to the computer using a telecine machine.

The 16mm camera can't handle the width of a 35mm spool.

Must have taken hours to do... fan-tastic.
