I laughed out loud because it was so unexpected.
I'm a little raw on the 'lens repair' subject line today coz I just picked up a repaired Nik 28-70 2.8 which set me back $400 ozzies to have fixed. Not to mention 3 months wait for a part from Japan. grrr. Can't think right now how much that is in your brand of cash but it's still a lot whatever.. sigh.

Must have been a heck of a repair. I know I have been luckier with my local Nikon repair center (who happens to be 45min. from my home when there is no traffic).
A few years ago, I had the latch on the camera back break on me. I thought they would have to replace the whole thing. Then I learned that they didn't carry the back anymore (more than 7 years old). So they manufactured a custom latch that they fixed to the existing back. You can't tell it's a new part. And it cost me only 50can$ to get it fixed. Lets just say I was happy  :D
