weekend - 23 July 2010
« on: July 24, 2010, 06:06:33 AM »
Is it really Friday and no weekend thread yet?  That may be a first in recent times ;-))

Getting ready to go to Eastern Europe in a month to kick off a long talked about (but not yet acted on) project, taking some shots with the Plaubel Makina testing the results of different films - as that will be the primary camera for this trip.  Here's a couple with Neopan.

Thus far with color film I haven't been terribly happy with the color separations in the darkroom using Portra NC & VC. Loading a roll of Ektar 100 as that's been a nice and reliable film for older lenses...

First stab at processing with lots of help from Leon.

Olympus Trip 35 for the scooter pic, the rest on the Chiaka 3 half frame and one with the lens taken off and helf around the other way.  All Ilford FP4.

Beck, all of these are half eaten - I'm assuming you took the photo after you had been at them and with very sticky fingers?  ;D

Miles - really pleased they worked out ok.

all looking great so far.

I've got a rare contribution to this week's thread … some 5x4 sheets taken in various locations while I was on holiday a few weeks ago in Norfolk and then the Yorkshire Dales.  It's the first time I've really had a good flex of my LF muscle … I'm really digging the quality and detail - highlight tones are just amazing (probably not to too evident in these small jpegs):

Totally awesome Leon. I know it's got nothing to do with the gear, but those images really make me keep my Fujica GW690! :)

Here is the best shot taken on my first roll with my new Supersampler. Probably the first real filmwasting camera I have. Since I don't really know what it's doing half the time, all I have to do it try and hope for the best :)

Leon,

I'm blown away by your LF stuff.  I love the way it renders texture, especially the water under those sailboats and in the waterfall.  Even in the low-res transfers I'm sure I can see the difference.  What camera did you use?

Thanks Terry - it's a shen hao field camera with a schneider symmar s lens. But this is only a part of the story - the film and developer used are just as important - in this case FP4+ in D 23. Then there's the realisation of the negative - which contrast grade to print at, which areas to dodge and burn to get the right interpretation etc.

All of this has a part to play in making the final print.

I haven't posted for a while, much to my frustration. And what a very fine selection of images I find here as always. Inspiring. Here is one from Ratwick Bay on Hoy, Orkney, which will benefit from some darkroom time. This is a nasty scan with the weird scratch line but is work in progress and a post at least!

Great stuff again this weekend, wonderful set from Leon. Really like the scooter too, Miles. Developed a roll of Rollei retro last night and messed up the Rodinal dilution only adding 1ml to 300ml water (doh). 1hr stand. Pleased with this kite flyer that I snapped through the car window whilst we were driving across the moor tho'

Cheers got a few more days till the Shanghai GP3 120 comes back from in the Toyocaflex with more Scooters ... (I know, I know ...). One from the last set that I'd lost on expired Side with a border Gimp'd on.  Odd leaks at the bottom.

a few holga long exposure night shots. one is of my neighborhood shot from the storage space on the roof and the other is a water station featuring doraemon, spongebob and hello kitty. also a contact print from a paper negative. i had done pinhole shots out in the field this same day, but they all came out almost completely white. that's the problem with doing that sort of thing out in the field - if your exposures are way off you won't know until it's too late.
