it's the original rollei retro so it is the remaining stocks of agfa apx 100. A very nice film that is sorely missed. Once this lot goes, there is no more.  I thought that it had already sold out, but there is obviously still some left.  Maco/Rollei film have already started to sell an alternative in the Retro 80S which is, by all accounts, an entirely different film.

Knowing Maco, it will be another old stock film being re-spooled and packaged.

Cool- I've used the APX 400 and liked it- but not this. Should be O.K. for 1.5 Euro a roll I guess...

Calling Peter R

Is it Neopan 400CN you process in normal B&W chemicals?

If so, do they come out like normal (given that the Fuji film has a clear base - or so Google leads me to believe)?

It's T-Max 400 CN that processes in C41... very similar to Ilford XP2.
(the CN stands for Chromogenic film)
I don't know if Fuji ever made some Neopan in chromogenic process...

Sorry Francis

It was a specific question about results when processing c41 film in b&w chemicals. I think Peter does it with one of the c41 films, and wondered what the results were like.

OK, an update on Canadian prices.
For all those who shop at Maxi & Co. supermarkets, packs of 5 rolls of 35mm of President's choice film (made in Japan... probably by Fuji) is being liquidated from 12.99 CAD down to 5 bucks (1 dollar a film)... Granted it's 400ISO but for the price... and it's not even expired!

I've been using the same stuff under the Photolab brand and it's very good for the price.

(and yes, I took all the 5 packs they had on the rebate table :) )

Chops if I can answer on Peter's behalf, we were talking about this when we met recently. Peter uses XP2 and I think he said he develops in Aculux, but don't quote me on that bit.

Spot on Nigel. 15 mins in Aculux. I don't remember telling you about this - you were obviously paying more attention to what I said than I was.  :)

And it comes out looking like any other B&W neg Chops.

Fuji, Ilford and Kodak all made/make B&W C41 films though I'm not sure of current availability. The Fuji and Ilford are very similar - though I remember a test in B&W magazine where Julien Busselle (I think) favoured the Fuji over the Ilford. The Kodak one is different as it's more like a colour film and has the orange base like colour C41 films.

If you're going to process some 'colour' C41 films (as opposed to the B&W C41 films) then the results will be less good. It works and you should get something you can scan but may not be good enough for traditional printing.

A couple of months later and I'm looking to buy some HP5 or FP4 and some months ago I remember someone mentioning a place to buy film cheaper than 7dayshop?
Does anyone remember where it was?
The cheapest I can see is £2.79 on ebay which isn't bad. (120)

what a difference a couple of years can make, I guess that's being a smaller market.
I still have a fair bit of APX 100 in 120, but I can feel a stocking up session just around the corner....

Is it just me or are the prices still rising?
I'm down to the last few Fuji 800z so am now back on ebay looking for colour, I'll probably go back to the 160s as there's lots of that about quite cheaply (in 220) and I'm buying more b/w 120 from redbox.
It's a horrible feeling when you realise you could actually run out :-/

Went to pick up a "new" lens for the Hassy today (traded a DSLR for it - yay!!). However, on the way back I realised I needed some film for tomorrow - so I popped into Jacobs on New Oxford Street. Nice, helpful bunch there but Ilford XP2 400 (120) at £4.99 a roll?? Okay, you get 10% off if you buy 5 but £4.99 a roll seemed steep to me.

Now then, I know my missus has bought me some film from Ag for Christmas - I just don't know where she's hidden the stuff....

Don't know... seems to me that 7day still got better prices...

7dayshop - Fuji Across 100 35  GBP 2.99  - 120  GBP 2.58
First Call  - Fuji Across 100 35  GBP 4.03  - 120  GBP 3.08

Not to mention free delivery+discounts.

Something I didn't get though was this message under the Ilford Films

"WE WOULD LIKE TO SUGGEST THAT YOU SWITCH TO KODAK BLACK & WHITE FILM - IT OFFERS MUCH BETTER VALUE!"

Are they gonna stop selling them as well ??
On the 7dayshop page there are only 19 items when you search for B&W film... Where are the other films ?

7 day shop have an ongoing dispute with Harman-Ilford around pricing.  As far as I know, they are selling off stock then stopping selling their stuff altogether.  This statement seems like a bit of a cheap shot though.

Firstcall are pretty good. Their main market is educational, schools and colleges. I've used them quite a bit in the past. They are not the cheapest, but are reliable and sometimes stock stuff that's hard to get elsewhere. It's good to get on their mailing list as they are one of the few suppliers that still produce a comprehensive full colour catalogue!

was just by my (no digital) photo shop and they had a paper on the desk from ilford explaining that their prices are going to rice due to the rising silver cost. didn't read it and couldn't find it online but that was a kind of steep graph.. didn't check the prices but I might hurry buying more film for the dayloader now.

Just bought some Foma 400 [to run at 800 in Rodinal in the main]from AG and some Rollei 400s - which I really really like - from Digitaltruth @ 1.89 gbp per 36 shot roll. Oh yes, and 90m of Polypanf from Luminos in Germany for 25 groats and a gimmer [sheep]. Should keep me going for a while. Rather given up MF as the film is too pricey now. As for 5x7 I'll stick to paper negs from now on.

That looks ace but would I ever shoot 50iso film? Hmmmm

1 36x24mm frame = 8 perforations = 38mm (ish)
38mm = 0.038m
152 / 0.038 = 4000 frames
4000 / 40 (36 exp + some for the start + leader) = 100 36 exp rolls (ish)

€39.5 / 100 = >€0.4 a 36 shot roll (is my maths dodgy?)

(not counting cost of shipping, cassettes, bulk loader etc)

 :o :o :o :o

(at that price I'm sure I can l learn to love 50 iso- can you push it I wonder?)

The deal on 5 152m cans is €145... that works out as > €0.29 a roll.

I'm kind of nutty and bought a bulk roll of Arista Premium in the states about 18 months ago when I was visiting... only just got around to using it (doh) and it really must be Tri-X. Made in the US and spews purple-y colour out when you dump out the developer  ;D No damage from travelling over in the carryon luggage either so I'm pretty much set for 35mm for ages.
4x5 on the other hand I'm always wincing at the price going up. Foma must be losing money as they've not really had a price increase in the last few years I've been using their film but Ilford have raised the price several times. Ilford's still the only way to go for me for 4x5 ISO400 film and I do need that extra speed when photographing people indoors, otherwise the still lifes get cheap Fomapan 100.
I've found Fomapan doesn't push process well at all and I really really like push processing (which is why I bought the faux-Tri-X which does push process nicely).

Polypanf works perfectly well at 100 asa which is how I use it. Here's a few I have shot http://www.flickr.com/search/?q=polypanf&w=30505166%40N00
Develop in Rodinal 1:50 or 1:100. Can't beat the stuff. I really like it. Finish grain - even at 100asa, cheap, but a rather thin clear base. And cheap.

Cool. That's much more helpful than the interweb which told me lots of people disagree how to develop it and what speed to shoot it at (and who seem to shoot it at grey cards). Grand pictures as well.

Think I'll order some as soon as I get my act together and get a bulk film loader and some cassettes sorted. I take it these long rolls have to be cut to fit in the loaders?

Thanks again,

Makes me laugh... the only reason I have a bulk loader is that I found one still full at a garage sale a few years ago :)
Funnier yet, I still don't know what was in it... I still haven't shot or processed any of it.

the rumour mill is currently whirring like crazy with a potential rise in Ilford materials by 30%.  AS if it wasn't expensive enough already?  Something to do with global silver prices.  Good job I stocked my freezer recently.

I think stocking up might be a good idea... especially if you can find cheaper than usual film... I don't think I've bought a roll of 35mm at full price for the last five years :)

This was posted on another bulletin board by Simon Gallery who is a rep at Harman tech. AKA Ilford & Kentmere, snagged and posted in a discussion on flickr in the I Shoot Film group and then snagged again by me to post here, so there!:  ::) :P :D

Note From HARMAN technology Limited : Re Price Increases
Dear All,

ILFORD Photo prices will indeed rise ex.factory from 1st February 2011. Firstly, let me assure you prices will NOT be rising across the board by 30.00% on film and paper.

We are absolutely determined to keep our product costs as low as possible, we have not had a worldwide price increase since September 2009, although some markets have had prices altered ad interim.

The cause of this increase is not only silver, but it is by far the biggest element, we have had significant rises in base costs, fine chemicals, taxation, employment costs, transport and energies. We have worked incredibly hard to try and offset these increases by cost savings and efficiencies in the factory and by necessity reducing staff numbers in 2009. HARMAN technology Limited had not planned ANY increase in prices AT ALL during 2011.

We always monitor silver prices on a daily basis, the huge incremental rise in the last four months was not expected, we had envisaged a gradual rise, as people invested in silver and other commodities due to currency uncertainties backed by growing industrial ( not photo ) demand.

Many suppliers raised prices in 2010 ( and probably will again ) we did not, we wished to see if silver would stabilize, we also hold significant stocks of coated parent rolls and we have been using up that stock in the last 12 weeks. All product now being finished and shipped is product coated with silver at the current elevated prices and these additional costs just cannot be absorbed by HARMAN technology Limited.

Prices do vary from market to market, this is a very, very complex equation of currency, import duties, local taxes, shipping costs, local delivery costs and distributor and reseller margins, currency fluctuations are by far the biggest introducer of anomalies in pricing around the world not the prices charged ex.factory.

New prices have been notified to resellers by distributors around the world for products leaving distributors after February 1st 2011.

Price does affect the volume of goods sold, that is an absolute fact, so we have a total determination to keep ILFORD Photo products at a fair price.

Since HARMAN technology Limited was established six years ago we have
always looked at different manufacturing options and technologies to grow our business, but fundamental to our business is the monochrome product range, the photo business will remain the largest part of our business for some appreciable time. In 2011 we have NO plans to delete ANY products whatsoever from our range and following excellent field trial feedback a brand new ILFORD Paper will be launched worldwide in Q2 2011.

We thank all our customers who buy and value our products.

Simon. ILFORD Photo, HARMAN technology Limited

I'd rather pay 10 - 20% more than seeing them make staff redundant.

Film is going to go up, it always has, always will.  It's an expensive medium....
