Topic: Brandt, Godwin and I was there...

I've been wanting to go and try to recreate two of my favourite pictures and finally managed to try it today. Both pictures were taken at Barbury Castle, one by Bill Brandt in 1948 and the other by Fay Godwin in 1974.

Here's the originals with my efforts afterwards.









It took a while to find the spot to take the Brandt one and I still don't have it quite right. I'll have to try that one again and this time take a copy of the original with me rather than do it from memory. The Godwin one will never be the same as there's been fencing added and a lot of new young trees have appeared.

An interesting project though (well, I thought it was).

I think these are great Peter.  Especially the Brandt - very close, but different enough.

I reckon a return in winter will get your Godwin version a bit closer.

Me too. The Brandt would also be better with a lower sun angle.

Very interesting project, Peter. It's really hard getting this sort of thing right isn't it? Do you have to do any serious trekking to get these shots?

I find it interesting in that it, maybe, helps to understand the original photographers thoughts when taking the photograph. To get the Brandt, for instance, you need to stand precariously on a fairly steep bank. He must have really wanted that particular alignment of the components to do that.

Barbury Castle is a popular place and has a large car park a few hundred yards from it so no major trekking involved to get to it. But it took me a good hour of walking around the site to find the shot Brandt took. I walked past the spot at least twice before recognising it.

Peter - I much prefer your version of Brandt's.  The extra detail in the land and sky 
I think I prefer your version of the Godwin one too, but I'm not that struck with the Godwin one in the first place.

I don't think so. I happen to be on holiday this week which means my film output has gone up by about 5000%. Usually I don't have the time.

Leon - that seems to a be a very ponderous not to say even nervous leap - looks like there might have even been a prod in the back just before your shot was taken?

more likely the offer of a chicken carcass on just out of frame.  the poor old girl cant even manage the thought of jumping any more though, as much as she'd like to hop over the fence after next-doors hens
