What's Going' On 'Ere Then?
« on: May 13, 2010, 12:03:11 AM »
Now I don't for one second think that this is a never-seen-before process and that I have blazed any trails, but I like it because I stumbled across it this morning quite by accident and I've not had any exposure to it before. I'll leave you guessing for a short while as to what it is I did here (although if you now anything about my current modus operandi you'll probably work it out fairly quickly)....this is very much early days and I'm only now starting to think of interesting applications of the process, but even in its current form it looks pretty cool. More will definitely follow.

The snap is of Streatham Ice Rink.

Is it an emulsion lift and varnished? In any case, keep working it brother, it looks good!

I got the emulsion lift, but yes, it looks 'caffeinated' and varnish-y?  What's your secret Ed?

Not sure the process but seeing that building brings back memories. To think I was once able to roller skate from Finsbury Park to the rink and back again... Nice and fast back in the day with minimum rules and boy did I enjoy spraying ice around in my Bauer Turbo's (though many years later when a quack operated on my right knee he was astounded at the damage inflicted). Watched the Streatham Redskins hockey team a few times also... Anyway, enough nostalgia, nice shot and 'fess up sir.

Emulsion lift... you're getting more experimental there Ed :)
The 3D feel is pretty amazing... just like the image has melted.

Well, you all pretty much got it - no surprise there. It's an (inadvertent) emulsion lift using Fujifilm FP100-C (gloss) left in a bowl of warm instant coffee for around 30 minutes. I was taking another look at how the FP100-C responded to my standard print staining process (as used on Polacolor 125i) and I decided to leave it in for longer than normal. When I went to inspect the print I noticed that the emulsion slipped a little across the top of the backing paper. I decided to try and peel it off and it came away incredibly easily. In fact the only reason it's so crinkled up in this photo is that it came off so quickly I wasn't ready for it and had to run around the room with it rapidly curling and getting stuck to itself while I tried to find some neutral paper to dry it on.

I'd never done an emulsion lift of any sort before, so I wasn't ready for the contraction of the image as it dried - I assume that's common to all lifts? I did a couple more this morning and this time used a heavy art paper to stick the emulsion to instead of the flimsy writing paper I used on this occasion. I'll take a look at them when i get home and hope they're a bit more manageable.

BTW, I tried it this morning with the silk finish film and it works just as well as with the gloss film. Different result as you'd expect, but the method and timings are the same. I also tried one in warm water without the coffee and it worked just the same (albeit without the brown cast).

One other thing; I've just been talking this through with Damion and he mentioned that there's been talk of emulsion lifts resulting in an 'unstable' image once it has been separated from the backing paper. Anyone have any thoughts on whether this is true and if so, what the workarounds are if any?

Looking good Ed.

One thing i also forgot to mention is that ive read its easier to buy some thin plastic,   mylar ( i think its called) 50p a sheet on ebay.   Once you take the print off in the liquid you can move it onto the mylar as its nice and smooth, then from there onto the paper.

I also read to use some hot pressed and fairly thick paper. Acid free should prevent the print from going bad. Also, getting the paper well soaked might be a simple way to deal with the wrinkling as the paper would shrink at the same time... though a dry sheet will be more inclined to resist the pulling motion of the emulsion...

Here's a link I found on the alt.photo site

Might be of some help.

http://www.calicocrafts.co.uk/acatalog/Mod_Podge.html

http://www.cornelissen.com/index.asp

A smidge of vaseline to get the image to sit how you like it (smooth/crinkle) and Mod Podge of choice to seal.

Cornelissen for various cotton/paper mix hot press paper as I mentioned before. Though for this process the worlds your backing.

Thanks Miller & Francois for the tips, much appreciated. The process described on the alt website is about 55 times more complex than mine, but if it produces repeatable effects then you could go for it...I'm all about about keeping it 'ballpark' so will stick to my stumbled-upon process for now. The Vaseline tip is good and I like the idea of some Mod Podge (even if it sounds like a fat character out of Quadrophenia).

Here are two more test lifts from this morning. One with caffeine. One without:

These are lovely, Ed.

You obviously function in the morning, I guess having children in the house demand that - all I can do is stare at the walls whist I feed myself.

Great to see some emulsion lift-off with a difference.

I used to have a dabble with this and also the transfer technique.

I have seldom seen it done as well as here.

Thanks for spilling the beans on the instant coffee technique.

Cheers,

Using the ballpark method has a "play" component to it which is very fine with me.
As for Mod Podge, you could also use some Acrylic Medium (and maybe channel some other dimension  ;) ).
One thing I don't like about these acrylic based mediums (like Podge) is that they tend to remain slightly soft and rubbery. Using real acrylic varnish from the hardware store, while not acid free, should yield a much tougher surface...
