Screwed-up pimped camera
« on: April 14, 2010, 10:39:12 PM »
Well... my contraptions might look good but they don't always turn out like I want... and this is the one that failed.
After seeing that blinged-out camera in the last podcast, I thought it would be nice to put a rhinestone encrusted camera in my collection. So, I went through my stuff to find a camera. I found this made in Taiwan camera that was sold by Direct Film Service years ago (before they went under in the early 90's). The camera is 100% plastic, so I thought it could be the perfect candidate.

I bought some plastic rhinestones, took the crazy glue out of the fridge and started gluing... Darn these are hard to put in a straight line. My initial idea was to go all around. But seeing the project didn't move fast enough, I decided to try fixing the stones to a piece of scotch take, apply glue and then fix the patch. The results were even worse. So I tried bigger stones... but was disappointed in the lack of bling. I also discovered a few things... like crazy glue will melt acrylic rhinestones... When all failed, I decided to pry them off and do something else. The glue had melted little round spots on the plastic. The fake leather was covered in little shiny round spots that wouldn't come off. Nightmare. So, as a last resort, I tried painting it with brass acrylic. Every brushstroke would show. I had to dab the paint on... and now, this is what I'm left with... I did manage to get the back open (paint had seeped-in).

Oh, well...

I thought it said "Dramatic Lens" at first glance.

I like it :)

mine are all beaten up, tape peeling, black boxes...a little zing and bling is appealing :)

Sorry for the delay there, Francois! I have been travelling home from Greece today - I landed at 1130 as they closed Heathrow and all UK airspace at 12 - in by the skin of my teeth. I had visions of being returned to Athens!
