5x4 dark slides : this might be a dumb question but ..
« on: April 07, 2010, 05:22:46 PM »
are all 5 x 4 dark slides all the same size?

With all this LF talk going about I thought I'd have a go at making myself a 5 x 4 pinhole. But if I make it to fit a particular manufacturers dark slide will any dark slide fit, should I want to buy a second one? Which I probably would eventually.

I was looking at this one for example: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/sinar-5x4-fitting-dark-slide_W0QQitemZ330419356860QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_Photography_Film_Cameras_ET?hash=item4cee8744bc

I know they aren't the same thickness, my pinhole wont fit MPP darkslides as they are too thick.

All 4x5 film holders are the same size. Only the thickness could possibly vary a bit... but not much. The registration distance is fixed by a standard (I can't remember which one).

But the darkslide (the thing which slides in the holder to protect the unexposed film from light) can vary from one make to the other.

Nigel - If you can work out a way to use a sprung back, then you should be fine with most 45 double darkslides.

Francois, I don't know if it's a Brit thing, but the terms 'double darkslide' 'darkslide' & 'sheet film holder' are all fairly interchangeable - all meaning the double-sided sheet film holder

Thanks guys. A difference in the thickness shouldn't cause as much of a problem.

Leon - you're right I realised I was saying dark slide where, in fact, I meant film holder.

I made a 5x4in pinhole camera out of foam core/board. The double dark slide is held in place by a sheet of foam core and a couple of elastic bands, so thickness doesn't really matter.

What material/design are you planning on using?

Cheers

I don't know either, but I learned the view camera gear talk through the old Calumet catalog... I guess I might just be overprecise in my talk :)
