I stumbled across a box of negatives made with my Rolleiflex on a music trip to Portugal in July 1993.  I photographed bands then (as I have continued to do since) in the central region, especially in the Serra da Estrela mountain towns.  The negatives were developed in London that same month at a place in Soho called Joe's Basement.  I assume that it is long gone now.  These negatives--from about 25 rolls of HP5--are spectacularly well processed.  They scan with almost no photoshop manipulation.  Printing is easy as well.  I have been mucking about with Rodinal for the last several weeks trying to make it work for me but, reminded as I am now that a good negative is the key, I think that I may give up and go back to  my previous developer.  I won't claim to being able to produce Joe's Basement quality but my negatives were much better than anything I have been able to produce recently.

Anyone want an unopened 500ml bottle of Rodinal?

Spent a day this week in Casa Grande, a desert town just south of Phoenix. Odd abandoned structure known as the Domes out in the middle of nowhere. Built in the 1980s as a tech factory, never completed and left as is. First two with ID-UV in the 190, third with the Universal w/100mm 2.8 and 665.

I was thinking pretty much the same thing.
My guess is it's the film and overexposure but I could be wrong.

Choppert , don't know really, the above, for example, just needed a white point balance correction in PS ... tho' I will use levels and contrast tweaks - which I feel I never get right.

Not sure what more to say, other than ... Light is King and Queen.

Francois,  the film is Kodak Colour Plus 200ASA. A Jessops freebie.

I'm sure you are right about the overexposure but since I don't use a light meter, every exposure is correct.  ;D

Thanks for the comments :-)

Blaxton - your negatives really do look quite amazing !  and Joe's Basement is such a fantastic name.  Think I'm going to start a new band and use that as the name ;-)  I'll have yer Rodinal if you're serious, I'm coming to the end of my bottle

Wavebeat - always like your glowing colour stuff too, subject matter v pleasing once again too :-)

Sean - some freaky stuff going in that 2nd ID-UV shot.  I'm trying to grab as much ID-UV as I can at the moment as I'm loving the transfers it's been yielding recently for me

I am serious about unloading my unopened bottle of Rodinal.  (I have a second bottle that I have been using--maybe 80ml gone--but I'll hold onto that.)

My only question is what would trans-Atlantic shipping be?  Would it be worth it?  I'm pretty sure that I can ship anywhere in the US for about $5.

Tinm@n you wished for more.

I've been meaning to take a picture of this building for sometime.
The plan was to take several and make a 'joiner' but only managed to a couple of frames before I ran out of film.

Expired FP4 at 125, in rodinal 1:100 stand.

Joe's Basement closed down a few years ago - sniff. I used it a lot & liked it. Not many pro labs left in Soho...but that's a subject for another thread.

On the shooting front I've been using my Land Cam + close-up filter setup to try a few portraits (and I mean literally 3 or 4 so it is very early days). I have 4 models close to hand (including myself), but one is always busy, one can't really speak or take instruction...and the other is a 5 year old girl with a mind of her own (i.e. she won't hold still). The one of Amy is more of a test shot than anything, but I'm posting it here because I like the light. The SP was more successful & proves that one way to get a decent SP is to have a focusing distance of 17cms thus allowing one to trip the shutter and hold a close-up filter in front of the lens whilst smouldering for the camera (ahem!)

I'll definitely be doing more portraits like this and then staining them in the coffee. I think it would work. Damion...this is advance warning for next weekend. Bring your game face.

Remember when I asked for help how to load my 4x5 sheets on reels? No you say? Well that's because it was MONTHS ago.  I finally gave it a whirl and lo - your advice worked like a charm so thank you all!  These were 'snapshots' I took (not knowing if I'd get any image) and my first time developing 4x5 in a Jobo on a Unicolor drum roller.  It went very well, but I think I need to work on perfecting tonal range with that constant agitation...

These two were from a roll of Ektar put through my Leica with a 24mm lens on a walk through the neighborhood with my beagles.  When I got the film back from the CVS Pharmacy, I scanned it and it showed a heavy green tinge.  Maybe I should try to find a different pharmacy.

All 35mm cropped to what you see.

The recent ones were taken with a Contax RXII with a Vivitar Series 1 19-35 zoom which I was trying out for the first time. The old one was taken (I think) with a Canon EOS with a borrowed 70-210 which I was testing with the view to buying into the EOS system for my equine stuff. Which I did in the end. Though I've now since sold it all as I don't shoot so many horses now (so to speak).
