Things I'd like to do before next year.
« on: August 27, 2009, 10:32:34 PM »
1. Use the Speed Graphic I've had sat in the cupboard for at least a year (or maybe two).
I've got a polaroid back for it and a couple of well expired boxes of film, had a basic lesson through the joy of skype, so there's really no excuse except the usual of lack of time.

2. Hire a life model to do some nudes.
Something else I've wanted to do for a long time but never got round to.

3. Use the hassy pinhole cap that arrived a week or so ago.
All my pinholes have so far been with the digital and I really want to try on film now but don't want to shoot myself so maybe with the model from 2.

I'll be glad to manage one out of three though :)

Where did you get the Hasselblad pinhole? Please let us know how it goes.

I've always wanted a Speedgraphic as well.

Those sound like good goals.

I'd like to do 2 as well and I've worked with nude models before but not on my own, always with a more experienced, more chatty photographer nearby.

I'll cry if you don't use your speedgraphic. I have one which is ancient which I use all the time and it broke today so I have to figure out a way of fixing it rapidly :(

You can get lots of wonderful pinhole materials from Eric Renner at:

including a Hasselblad body cap.

I have one and it works great.

gothamtomato, i bought mine from randy at holgamods, probly could have found one in the uk but i know he has a good reputation.

heather, i haven't done it before either, and i'm not the most chatty when i'm taking pictures so i hope that wouldn't make it too awkward.
and yes, i've GOT to use it, mine's pretty ancient too, don't even know if it works yet....i hope you manage to get yours fixed up soon.
(have you got some pictures to share that you've taken with it?)

good to know, info red, and thanks for the link :)

anyone else got a to do wishlist?

The key thing to remember when working with models is you must treat them with respect and praise them constantly. If you're quiet, they don't know what you're doing or if what they're doing is right or wrong. When shooting models with my speed graphic, I've discovered it's best to praise the model and tell them somewhat what you're doing or at least say "one more!" or "just a few seconds more, you're doing great!"
I've been eyeing up models on artmod.org... they're better for slow working photographers. I have worked with a model that is more used to digital and they move around a lot more since that's what digi shooters seem to want, a new pose every 2 seconds  ::)
Remember to get them to sign a release form.
Expect to pay between ?12-?20/hour for a very good model and even at 2-3 hours, that time flies by. You should offer an at least 10 minute (paid, inc in per hour pay) break per hour of working/posing. Go for an experienced model if you don't have any set ideas and are not comfortable trying to get people into poses and positions you want. I've really only worked with experienced models hired by other photographers.

Sometimes models will do "TFP/TFCD" which stands for Time for Prints or Time for CD. They're looking to build a portfolio to promote themselves, basically. This may or may not work out well for you personally if you're not shooting digital along side or making weird prints like I do (cyanotype), which is why I nearly forgot to mention it.

uh I think that's all my limited advice for my two times I've taken photos with a nude model.

As far as the speedgraphic, quite a lot of these are contact prints from the 1912 Top Handle Speedgraphic that I use

I don't print them as B&W usually. I have really only printed two as contact prints in B&W

thanks for that advice heather, after what you said i realised i do speak to people when i'm taking their picture, i usually sound a klutz but at least i'm positive about them :)
and i've seen life models advertise in our local arts mag , i'll try and find one with their own space if possible.

beautiful cyanotypes too, i liked your how to do them set, i had no idea.

all excellent goals !

#s 1 & 2 should be a lot of fun - new gear, new subject matter, why not try them both at the same time !

You can also get a film back (120 @ 6x7) for the Graflex for that fateful day the polaroid runs out -- if you don't have sheet film backs.

Have fun !

Fantastic goals!  I think it probably helps to state them out loud and post them publicly.    I might have to do the same, to hold myself accountable!  ;-p

Vicky,  your speed graphic might turn out to be lots of fun. I bought a Crown G.---and about a year later a set of macro lenses. I've enjoyed working with these---and have been doing some botanical stuff. Attached are two macro shots: one is negative, the other is polaroid (in that order). What I'd love to get around to doing is printing some  of the macro negatives  in platinum...

At my son's 21st birthday party we set up the CG, and he and his childhood friends took some commemorative shots, on Fuji instant bw; they  had a ball doing it.

I'd like to take at least one nice snap before the year is out.
