Filmwasters Collaboration #17 - "Me by Me" is now online
« on: May 06, 2009, 01:25:01 AM »
Hey team, I finally uploaded the latest collaboration gallery. It looks wonderful. Go take a look:

http://www.filmwasters.com/collaborations/v/17/

Thanks as always for all of the submissions; if you guys didn't send the material in we wouldn't be able to put together sexy little galleries like this so please keep it up (& let's have some more participants next time). There's a decent range of styles and ideas on show as usual which is excellent. I'm tired & need to get some sleep but I'll chip in tomorrow with some thoughts on my various faves.

Okay. Long story short. I emailed Ed asking him to remove a photo of mine in the previous collab, "2008". He must have thought I meant the new one for the Me by Me collab. Lines crossed and he didn't include mine. None to worry. I think he is still recovering from his self photos from the other night. Anyhow, here's mine. A homage to all of my deceased Aunts' who I resemble a great deal when they were younger. Only I submitted a b/wversion shot with a Spectra. Sorry for the mix up, Ed.  :)

Damn, I was expecting a bigger turnout. What gives?

Yeah, I kind of thought that with the theme being not too challenging this time round more people might give it a go, but with my own life frequently spinning out of control time-wise these days I am absolutely not going to judge anyone else on whether they were able to contribute or not. I suspect a lot of people here wanted to join in, or at least thought about it and then either forgot or ran out of time, or both. Anything over 10 is fine by me because I think that number gives the viewer enough to look at and think about. If you look back over the previous 16 collaborations the numbers go from 8 to 22 and tend to average out at around 15, so we're there or thereabouts.

The other thing I've just thought about is that in the discussion thread on the forum that led up to us going with SP's as a theme I suggested that we go for new work this time round (something we don't usually put in the guidelines) and I'm sure that reduced the numbers by a few. The "Colour/Color" collab got the most entries, but you can see why. Most people would be able to trawl through their portfolios and dig out something from the past that they felt merited inclusion, re-size it and mail it in. Not so this time.

As I understand it, both Skorj & Leon have actually taken photos for the collaboration, but neither has yet had time to get them out of the camera. They may backfill in the next few days...or not. Busy, busy, busy.

I think there are some really wonderful SP's on show here though so am keen to dwell on them rather than be concerned that we're a few contributions lighter than I hoped we might be.

Yeah, sorry they ended up one after the other, but the gallery is ordered alphabetically on file name so that the way it worked out...in a way though having the two alt process photos next to each other is actually pretty interesting.

ALL of these are fabulous and utterly inspire me!

Heather's cyanotype is a dream, viewing Peter Robinson's is good for the giggling soul, holy-goodness "Brandyman-Wenn"!, Blurfection in Jeremy's scream (which is perfectly tempered by Yaniv Waisson's meditative lovely) and Oooo!  gotta love the 'bits of botulism' on Rhys Baker's and the 50s esque dream of Rebecca Pendel's... I could go on.

The two photos that made me smile out loud were Francois' and Damion's...oh and The Scream shot too which I could sympathise with totally. The more I look at the gallery though the more good stuff leaps out. Some very clever people here aren't there.

I hope your wife didn't ask any question about the mess and the bloodshot eyes that probably came with the "experiment" :)

Great stuff everyone - I've gone back at least three times to look at all these fine specimens of photographic excellence! I think my favourites, in no particular order, are Peter, Damion and Francois.

I had intended to participate, but as usual my idea was over-complicated, so I ended up not doing it. I realise now I should have just kept things simple.  ::)

Damn! Damn! DAMN! What a wicked collection. One of the best for sure. So many stand out photographs, and really well thought out. What a proud bunch to be associated with.

I would pick one fave, but she's likely to get a swollen head, so I will be quiet about it instead. That wasn't supposed to be a poem.

I feel silly for not shooting one myself. Maybe I can find ten minutes in the street... Skj.

Edit. Done! Who said Polaroid is dead? Ha ha. It seems I messed up the sort order though. Apologies all. I left Becky's as last, because it seems to fit that wistful position.

I know this collab was quite fun to do. As with most of the portraits, there is a side story that goes with taking the picture.

This was my first time with 600 film. I had a few cameras I had found at rummage sales but never had the guts to lay the 26$ required to buy a pack of film. About two weeks ago, I needed something at the grocery store. They didn't have what I wanted at the place I usually go to so the clerk sent me to the next city's store. While I did find what I wanted, I stumbled into their electronics section (don't you love hypermarkets) to see if they had anything good on sale. And behold, on one of the racks: two packs of Polaroid 600. So I took one and went to see the clerk and asked her if they could lower the price since they were expired. She then told me "Oh!, these things. I found them while cleaning out the back store. I thought we might be able to sell them to someone." She then called her boss who agreed to let me have them at 50% off. I took only one pack and came back home... I took a few shots, including this self portrait. My mom liked it so much she asked me to go and get the second pack which luckily was still on the rack. (I'm happy she twisted my arm) So, I now probably have the only two packs pf 600 film left in the region :)

Ed, The CSI team are on their way. I bet they can't work out what you were doing when you met your untimely end. I wonder how they'd explain the cherry brandy... actually, how do you explain the cherry brandy?

I like all the results but if I were forced to pick three, they'd be Ed's, Heather's and Nic's.

Here's the digi mock-up for my original idea. Might explain a bit better how I came to the final result.

I have to agree with all that these are stupendously good.  Really strong, all of them.  Mine is still in the darkslide , I got my 5x7 meniscus lens pinhole out for this one ... I'll get it dev'd, printed and scanned after I finish my exams next week.

As for the Kodak book, I have two, including an old one that was made in the 30's. Very different content in both volumes.

Gregor, I'm trying to work out if that's an insult or not....not in a bad way (in other words no offence taken), but is my shot really red or something? Must go and check.

Leon, thanks for adding your self-portrait. Very brave of you because I know you're not your favourite subject. I love the 'broken' quality of your snap and, true to form, it looks nothing like you again.
