Do you know of any worthwhile 35mm point & shoot cameras still around these days? Perfect for my kids.

Depends on how old your kids are and whether you mean to buy new or used. I don't think there are any available new but ebay is full of used ones. I've got a Yashica T Zoom (known as the T4 Zoom in some places) and also a Rollei Giro 70 WA, both of which give excellent results. The Yashica still fetches a good price usually but the Rollei was cheap. Both of these have got 28-70 zooms on them.

yeah they are tough to find except online nowadays. depends on how much you want to spend on your kids, i guess, as well. there are some really nice PAS cameras, like the gr1 and fuji natura...but if your looking for something in the $60 range, ebay is probably your best bet.

ed Damion and I are all fans of the ricoh R1 - can be had on ebay for just a few pounds - a great auto-everything camera with a great lens.

Olympus Stylus Epic

Pocket sized, weather proof, and just plain fun.
Takes great snaps for postcard exchanges too!

some of the leica 35mm af point and clicks can be had for pretty darn cheap - such as the mini zoom. fun, easy to use and you'll want to steal it from your kids from time to time ! and the olympus pen ee half frame is fun for kids if they have the patience to take 48/72 shots before seeing the results !

I had a few Leica p/s and they were quite disapponting. The Leica red dot means nothing on these cameras except it's a red dot. The Yashica T4 is outstanding but high as an ebay resale. The Olympus Stylus and the Stylus Epic give outstanding results. The Epic version can be a little pricey. I sold one recently.

I've got a Rollei Giro 28-70 up on ebay now. Priced right. Outstanding results. Made in Germany.However, I avoid shipping out of US because I hate the paperwork and the overseas postal rates.

I'm also sitting with NIB Yashica Microtec 28-70 which rivals the T4 with respect to results. They show up on ebay.

Stay away from the inexpensive Nikons. As with Leica, it's only the label.

I've played with a lot of p/s from the very first which was mad by Konica. If I can be of help, let me know.

my 17 year old is quite entranced with the olympus pen - he likes the ease of use, the compact size and the results, plus the groovy look of the camera. he got into shooting film a couple years back using the pen and a Holga CFN to snaps of his friends and such. Neither are high optical quality, but he's not trying to do anything but capture fleeting scenes of his life and an occasional arty shot.

But of course, he also uses a point and shoot digital. For his generation of instant gratification I'd say that's a good thing that he's shooting some film on some regular basis.

I bought a nice Rollei Prego for ten quid on The Bay, pretty good results.
But I'd go for the 35mm Holga, easy for the kids to use, and would look as cool as hell!

Vivitar ultra wide & slim, fixed focus, fixed shutter speed and aperture, very lightweight. If you can't find a cheap vivitar ultrawide & slim, look for eximus wide & slim. Don't pay too much for them, they're really cheesy plasticy cameras, dare i say, even more cheesy than a holga.

Thank you for all the great suggestions. I think I've found an Olympus XA locally and will have a look at it tomorrow.
Kids are 11 and 13 and have a digital Canon Ixus and C-Lux 2, great cameras, but find them too tedious. Would rather hand over film to the lab and pick up cool photos, with no fuss. Little chips off the old block.

Olympus XA's are a great choice. From what I read, they tend to give an LCA-esque look to the images.

Just remember that the XA is a coincident rangefinder camera. The XA-2 is zone focus and, therefore, much easier to use and cheaper.

This is what I suggest. Takes nice pics - some samples here:

Can't take an out of focus pic, and it's likely that you'll capture what you were trying to shoot. And if it breaks or gets lost, it's just another $10. I find ASA 200 film works best.
