genius of photography - nerdy question
« on: March 07, 2009, 06:48:33 PM »
Hello

Sorry for the nerdy question, but in Genius episode four, when Parr and Gossage are doing their road trip bit, what camera is that Gossage is using? Looks pretty funky!

Not who was who, and it was a while ago I last watched it - but one is using a Polaroid of some sort... Skj.

Was certainly chunky enough but of looked like he wound it on, rather than removed a sheet. Could it have been a Koni Omega?

Just been watching the repeat of this.

The one slung over his shoulder was definitely a Koni Omega. The one he was using looks a bit different but probably the same, just a different model perhaps? I'm not a Koni expert.

Here's the best pics I could get from the film.

It sure looks like a Koni. They were the only ones to my knowledge who used the push-pull film advance. It's the slightly oblong thing sticking out the side. From what I remember, the inside gears are supposed to be soft brass to prevent jamming... but they would wear out prematurely and would strip easily if you wind too fast...

Now as to which model it is precisely, I'd have to do a bit of research on it.

Good detective work.
I saw a similar camera used by William Eggleston in this Youtube clip, around 10 seconds in.

Could be a Koni-Omega

With an accessory viewfinder on top

There are a few variations on the model, but it is a 6x7 rangefinder.

I think the large camera Eggleston is using is a Mamiya Universal Press (cousin to the Polaroid 600 SE).

That's a Mamiya Press. One of the earlier ones I think - not the Universal.

I looked on Google images for "Mamiya press" and the Super 23 looks most like the one in the clip.  Interesting to find out about a couple of cameras I'd not heard of yet.
