The problem is the bit about having to die before your prints are worth anything. :-[

Apparently there are more and more students wanting to learn traditional darkroom stuff as opposed to digital too - lokok at the resurgence in pinhole and alt process work - wet plate is very much on the up too but I'll save that one for a while longer!

I don't think even that would do it for my stuff, Dave!   :(

Maybe the Elvis trick is the solution (you know, people see him at the grocery store all the time ;) )

As for me, living in Quebec (Canada), there is absolutely no market for photography since the 1970's.
I read that it has to do with a big silk-screen scandal. Galleries were selling photolith prints of printed artwork for the real deal while faking the number of prints made from the original. Once the truth was uncovered, the market for anything that can be produced in series has dropped bellow ground and hasn't surfaced yet.

I even know a girl who tries to sell her prints (with little success). To guarantee that the number of prints is limited, she makes 3 prints of the negative and cuts the negative in 3 parts that she attaches to the back of the print as proof of authenticity!

Like everyone here, I sure would like to sell some prints and be able to make a few bucks in the process.
But I chose to do photography for pleasure. That way, I always get a reward every time I pick up a processed roll at my favorite lab... and opening that envelope, to me, is worth a million bucks.

The real trick to selling your wares is (a) talent (something that's not lacking within this forum) and (b) a marketing strategy to sell yourself and your work. I strongly recommend (and I know Susan B would agree as well) that anyone truly interested in making a go in the fine art photography market rush out and get the latest edition of Mary Virginia Swanson's booklet Marketing Guidebook for Photographers:

http://www.mvswanson.com/guidebook/guidebook.htm

After reading that forwards and backwards (twice, maybe three times) and following the advice she gives that is appropriate for you, the next thing to do is to get yourself a consult with Swannie herself. It's worth every penny. Susan's already done it and I plan to do it sometime next year. My own interest is in print sales and gallery representation for starters. I met Swannie this spring when she was in Chicago for a photography educator's conference. She's an incredible resource, gives really solid advice, knows EVERYBODY in the business and really cares about her clients. I could go on and on about her but she's the bee's knees as far as I'm concerned.
