online photo critiques
« on: June 26, 2006, 09:33:25 AM »
I just picked up these links from elsewhere, but though I'd post them here as they are quite thought provoking.  I've been pretty much guilty of what is being said here, and I think often, it's what we all expect others to be saying, but when it's put in this way, I realise how ridiculous my comments have been .......  :-[

great read! funny and so true... i tend to look at the photos of people who have critiqued certain aspects of my photos and judge their opinions on how much i like his or her stuff.
it's entirely possible to become disillusioned with your own work from a site like flickr (or even photo.net or whatnot)...when you see some really great photos (yours and others) that get 3 views and no comments, but the snapshots of kids or balloons or sunsets have 10,000 views and 400 comments. besides pure nudes, which automatically garner a million shots, any sign of (female) cleavage also reels them in...but I'm guilty of looking, too.
anyway, early in the morning babbling here.

Thanks for posting this Leon. It's always great to read a thoughtful author but to read a funny one too has made my day.

Great stuff indeed. The guy's a good writer and funny with it...my guess is he's also seen a LOT of online crits in his time. Some of those spoofs were uncomfortably close to the mark  :-[

Whilst on the subject; I always felt that some of us were under a bit of pressure over at toycamera.com to give feedback/crits on other people's output (e.g. I was asked for it directly on several occasions), but I felt uncomfortable about it; I mean what do I know about it all? If there was ever a person who was aware of and quite comfortable with their own limitations as a photographer then it's me. I scrape along on what little time I can dedicate to photography, but I've never been able to get really comfortable with it and just recently I've forgotten just about everything I ever learnt anyway. It is a wonderfully creative outlet and also one that I've met a lot of great people through...but should I be let loose on other people's work? Probably not.

It's worth noting that I did do some crits for the odd toycamera punter, but I just made an ass of myself and I doubt I was of any real help to anyone.

Oh jeeeeez.

For the first time, I decided to enter a set of critiques for each entry in the monthly photo comp here at work.  Just sent the form in.  If only I'd read this first - what a tosser!  :-[
