Water, water everywhere....
« on: October 15, 2008, 12:28:20 AM »
Took these in France recently and can't decide which I prefer. The bridge is nice in the second one one, but the water more dramatic in the first. Any preferences out there, or is it all a little chocolate box-y and best ignored?

Pentax SLR + dark red filter + f22 + Tasma ASA100 expired. Shaky hand-held.

...and here's one I like a lot taken from the same spot (i.e. not of the same subject), but looking directly down instead of across to the right.

If I bought some chocolates with these on the box, I'd expect them to be pretty strong chocolates!  :)

I like the first one. It's louder.  Does that make sense?

Al, is that louder like punk, or louder like rock....or Nikki? The difference is crucial  :D

Seriously though, I think I know what you mean. I guess your attention is drawn more to the 'raging' water in the first one so it looks louder.

2nd one for me.

like the wider view as well.

all good though,    given my coffee habit a slow hand held shot for me is about 1/500.

Hmmm....tough call. At first glance I found the 2nd one more appealing, but when I look at them longer I understand what you're saying about the water being more dramatic in the 1st image. The second image works well because the horizontal framing is consistent with the geometry of the bridge, which fills the top of the frame. Framed a little bit more to the right, and down a bit would give the dramatic water found in the 1st image.

Having said that, all three are lovely images.

1st one for me. Much tighter and stronger image. Though I like 3 as well.

Is this an excuse to show our own gushing images...?

These were also handheld.

Second one for me, Ed.  It seems like a clear choice to me but I always love the idea that other people feel differently even though I am definitely right..

i like the first one, because i can't like what gordon likes. maybe crop the top to lose the lighter area in the top left?

...and since I have no respect or love for either you or Gordon (or your families) I guess that leaves me hating both images.
 :D

I didn't crop either because I'm still sort of kicking them around, but may well do eventually. There are 4 or 5 more taken at the same time which probably work just as well. Cheers for the feedback.

Peter: By all means, gush away!

I don't deserve this. My art doesn't deserve this. You're killing me. It's been a long day. I'm going off to bed with a heavy heart.

LOL!!

Relax Ed
I think the phantom cropper does that to everyone's work.

BTW- Not exactly chocolate box photos, more like Ilford Photo Paper Box photos
which I hope is a compliment, although I admit a preference for the edgier abstracted crop the Phantom showed

I like the third one for its intensity and because on a quick view I can't figure out what I'm looking at.

That's always a plus in my book.
