Greetings!
« on: March 17, 2008, 07:49:59 PM »
Hi Everyone.  I'm a newbie here, and happy to find a friendly group :)

I've included a couple of pics to see if I am working this system correctly.  Been working on stand developing with Rodinal.  And these images are all done at 1:200 dilution, 1hr, agitation for the first minute only.

Cheers...

Rem

Those were taken with an AGFA Isolette II.  Just purchased it, actually, restored, with red bellows and all.  It's the only 120 camera I have, but I'm plotting.

That's not true, actually.  I have an old Argus 75 that I found languishing somewhere, took it apart, and got it all cleaned up.  Unfortunately, I haven't found any old 620 spools for re-spooling, but they'll turn up some day.

Cheers...

Welcome - I love the images and you have me thinking of trying some stand development myself - so thanks!

Welcome to Filmwasters. Looks like your stand experiments have paid dividends.

I prefer to modify the 120 spools rather than re-spool to 620. If you just take a tiny pair of scissors or nail clippers or the like and shave off the ends of the 120 spools... so that the plastic doesn't stick out past the point to where the film is spooled, it will work fine. A little sandpaper helps smooth the ends, just be sure to mind the grit. Also, should be done in subdued light of course. Hope that explanation makes some sense... perhaps can find some photos if necessary.

Thanks for the heads up, Jason.  I'll give it a whirl today.

:)  I have some fresh Rodinal here waiting to try out some of this laid back stand development.  Is it necessary to stand, would it be OK to sit or even lay down?  ;)

I actually like to dance around the house, sporting a tutu and a rhinestone cigarette holder.  My wife thinks that I've been watching too many Eddie Izzard clips on YouTube.

One of the weirdest stand development experiments I read about was by William Mortensen. He put the film for development in the fridge for a whole week!

I just couldn't bare the suspense :)

I had heard that story before.  The Mortensen link is fascinating.  I knew nothing about him.  A  truly interesting story.

Has anyone tried this stand development concept with other developers? My youg children have a habit of waking up at the exact moment I am due to invert a tank. A 60 minute break would be great!

Apparently there are only certain developers that this type of development works with, and I can't remember why this is true.  I know, for example, that it does not work with D-76.  I have to check that out.

I just tried stand developing with a new (new to me) film---FP4+---and here is a shot from that roll:

Karl - it works very well with the Catechol based developers - prescysol, pyrocat, exactol, dixactol, Tannol   any-otherol etc

I  am a great fan of Rodinal but never used this stand method.   Do you just stand the film in it for  an hour with only light agitation at the start.  Do the times vary between different films.

For one thing, it's easier than the water bath process!

As for not working with D-76... I can't tell for sure.

I  am a great fan of Rodinal but never used this stand method.   Do you just stand the film in it for  an hour with only light agitation at the start.  Do the times vary between different films.

Stand and semi-stand development are methods that have basically been worked out by trial and error.  One of the advantages of this type of development is the so-called "adjacency effect" which results in a halo-like edge seen between shadow and light, resulting in an increase in apparent sharpness.

Also, the increased dilution with decreased agitation will allow high values to build more slowly, while the shadow values seem to gain density at a more constant rate.  The minimal amount of agitation holds down the grain.

At any rate, my method is to use a dilution of 1:200.  AGFA has always recommended using at least 10ml of Rodinal in solution, but almost everyone I know of disregards this and uses 5ml per 1000ml of water.  I have used 3ml per 600 ml of water without any problems so far.  A syringe makes measuring a lot easier.  I agitate pretty vigorously via inversion for the first minute to assure that the developer is well dispersed.  Then I do nothing until the time is up.  I have settled upon 1 hour, but I know of folks who have fallen asleep and not gotten to the soup for 5 hours with no ill affect.  As you can imagine, at these very dilute levels the developer is going to exhaust itself before too much bad can happen.  BTW, this method of development is very forgiving of temperature, which is another plus.  Rodinal is not suited to high temps, but I believe that anything in the 66-70 degree area is OK.

That's it.  So far I have used the same method with Tri-X, Plus-X, and now FP4+.  Give it a try sometime, and I would be interested to hear of the results.

Cheers...
