leather camera straps?
« on: March 12, 2008, 05:40:31 PM »
a new friend(i seem to be meeting lots of film and camera nerds at local flickr meetups) of mine just asked me where he could get a leather strap for his lc-a. i've posted some examples below that he showed me. i suggested he try to find somewhere local that sells custom made leather goods(which is probably a lot harder than it sounds), but i was wondering if anyone happened to know any place that sells straps like this? he was particularly keen on the orange one pictured below.

The orange one does look kinda kinky ... and we can't even see from where the straps are hanging.

No idea... I know there is a leather store (where they sell unfinished leather) called Tandy,  (http://www.tandyleatherfactory.com/) ... I don't know much about it...

You might be able to find dog leashes that can be adapted at your local pet shop...

ah, a dog leash is a good idea. i passed the pet shop possiblity on. a saddle shop is probably a good idea, but i don't think we really have them around here unfortunately.

thanks for the jokes and suggestions everyone!

I just recently got a leather camera strap and half case from Luigi Crescenzi www.leicatime.com

It isn't that cheap, but he will hand make them to your specifications.

Just when I thought this forum was in danger of getting just a little bit stale*, this utterly amazing thread pops out of the blue.

From top to bottom, from the original post and that spectacular photo of the funkiest, most deranged camera strap I've ever seen, through Sean's bondage comment, the link to the old school website and a joke about being hypnotised by a dancing cummerbund man this is comedy gold and has quite made my day. Thanks  :D

Now then, going back to that camera strap, William....I mean, what the hell!? By accident (or possibly by design) it transforms an innocent camera from being, well,  just a camera into something more sinister; a muzzled gimp toy maybe, possibly a subtle sign to passers by that you're up for 'a bit of strange'? Alternatively it could signify that the camera protests what's going on at Guantanamo - the orange leather wasn't lost on me! It could also be a sign of over possessiveness and pride on the part of the owner - i.e. it's fully on display but at the same time SOOOOO locked down that you ain't getting your hands on it.

* On a related point; sorry for not being around and contributing to events here in recent weeks. It's all been a bit busy. Will make more of an effort to get on here with some recent photos and the usual uninformed comment.

looking at that orange thing, i don't see how you could use the camera. the straps are in the way of the mechanisms!

At the risk of being sensible, can I just mention the Upstrap (http://upstrap-pro.com/) - minor miracles they are, and just the ticket if you want a honest, decent, practical strap rather than something emanating from Miss Whiplash's sordid dungeon.

Hey Eliot Spitzer would drop 8 grand for that  ;) Those of you in the UK or elsewhere might not get that

Oh that story has - for some reason - received a lot of coverage over here in Blighty.  All pretty tame stuff compared to the antics of our last Conservative administration as far as I can see.

Anyway, fairly off-topic now ... unless we should discuss the merits of shooting blackmail photos on film?

Not quite blackmail - but I love this story of what, at the time it was taken, was a meaningless photograph. Except it went on to have quite some significance...

An interesting mention of archives in the story.  Another reason for shooting film, slides in his case.
I realize digital archive methods are improving, but still.....I think we are far from ever having the durability of film.
