got a new dog ..
« on: February 19, 2008, 01:21:11 PM »
...and what better excuse to place 35mm cameras strategically around the house and waste some film.  No ground breaking pics here - but what can I say?  I'm a  proud owner!

Oh great... now I want a dog! Thanks.

Did just buy a lizard, but something tells me that if I put photos of it on here it won't get the same response - somehow not as photogenic!

Nice photos - again, the second one for me

Nice images I must say. Been looking after two ancient dogs for three months while the man they own is in NZ. Got to love them and enjoy their company - if not their 'air-products' :-(

thanks everyone

skj - is a dog-person a kind of human/canine hybrid?

Becky - Meg is fine, a little old now, very grey and keeping the young whipper-snapper in his place

Ailsa - they're getting along well.  I'd bring them down to see you but Woody cant be in a car for more than 5 mins without vomitting.  We're working on that particular trait ....

Carl - one is fun, but two are much better, and never any seperation probs when you go out.  Best deal all round ;)

Stu - show us the lizard.  I used to live in a house-share, one of the the other tenants ran a shop specialising in snakes and lizards ... we had an iguana in the kitchen, water-dragons and gechoes in the lounge and a 23 foot reticulated python in the hallway, plus a few chameleons scattered around for good measure.  Always good to see a reptile or two.

Andrea - our old dog was a pure-bred greyhound and suffered from the (in)famous greyhound-gut.  You could hear it rumbling from 40 feet and smell it at around 10.  The air would get so thick you could take a chisel and carve eggy-statues out if it.

GHT - the film is delta 400 and I developed it in d-23 1:3

the dogs are lurchers - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lurcher click this for an explanation - at a guess Meg's parents were a greyhound and a greyhoundxcollie lurcher, and Woody is probably a whippet x'd staffordshire bull terrier or similar.  Our last greyhound was the most placid dog I've ever met - she'd put up with anything.  Friends of ours greyhounds are the same.  Lurchers are a little more highly strung and need a bit more care in handling, as they actually have a brain, but are still low-maintenance compared to other breeds.

Lovely dogs, congratulations. Skipper sends his best. He is not behaving as I expected in his role as photographer's assistant and has an annoying habit of destroying whatever I'm showing an interest in (flotsam, jetsam, etc)

As Leon is only too aware from my constant whingeing on the subject, the lack of a dog in my life is of constant distress to me. However, this is my surrogate mutt, Lottie, my mum's somewhat self-possessed miniature Schnauzer. My mum is visiting us at the moment, so Lottie has been curling up on the chair next to my computer as I work, just as all perfect dogs should...

more or less the same. I use many different ones to keep them on their paws.  Such as "treat", "green beans", "pizza". All of these and a few more get this reaction. But I actually have to supply with the one I use.
They have me trained!!!!

Oh, Lottie is cute :)

I would be totally bereft without mine. I can't survive without at least two floating around.

At the mo I have a Baxter and a Sophie ( i didn't name them) they are both rescues. We don't do pedigrees.

One is a Lab and one a rotty cross.

Will post a few images shortly if I can.

Sigh...makes me wish I didn't live in a top floor flat and have to travel about with work so much...then I too could have a pooch.  Oh and a cat, and a snake, and goats, chickens, ducks, maybe a sheep or two...im not bias!!!

Seriously though, Leon they look like fantastic companions, scruffy lean dogs, my favorites (though I would have an Irish wolfhound if I could)!

I have a dog! I have a dog! I have a dog! I have a dog! I have a dog! I have a dog! I have a dog!

I have a dog!

He is a beautiful black greyhound with tiny white flecks all over, and he 'found' Roland and me on Easter Monday. We've managed to find out from the identification tattoos in his ears (and with the help of Leon  :)) that he's an ex-racer who was retired on 12th February, but whoever supposedly re-homed him obviously lost interest and abandoned him, because he hasn't been reported missing to the police or dog warden. We had a visit from the warden on Friday, where she checked that we could give him the life of luxury that he so obviously deserves, and, following a 30 day period (assuming no-one comes forward for him during that time), he will be ours! We have named him Archie, after Archie Leach - AKA Cary Grant - because he is suave, sophisticated, tall, dark and very handsome.

I could write about him until sunrise, but I won't inflict that on you. However, I would ask that you feast your eyes on this beauty.

(Incidentally, Skorj, he would OWN your cat  :P)

there he is - excellent - all still going will with the Arch then I hope? No little mis-haps?  I take it from what you say to skj that he isnt cat-friendly ... you're going to have to toughen up your shoulder then.  The amount of times I've had pulled muscles and upper back strain from an unanticipated cat chase ....

Dogs schmogs. Whatever. Aren't they dangerous or something?
;D ;D

No dogs at Wenn Mansions. Used to have cats, but the ex got them as part of the informal custody settlement and since then I've been pet an soap opera free. I assume however that at some point my 2 young children will encourage me to re-think the position re pets (although I ain't budging on the soap operas!).

Ailsa: congrats re the new addition.
Ken: What a photo. I love it.
Leon: My faves of your bunch are 1 and 3.

Until it comes down to the choice of loyalty or stealing your dinner off the kitchen surface at which point theft and deception win hands down.

well - almost.  He would have had a much better chance if you'd washed all the flecks of white paint off him - probably best to keep him out of the room next time you paint the ceiling.

I'm a weirdo, I prefer small caged/tank-homed creatures... though  I do "rescue" my hamsters when possible.  There are actually quite a lot of them out there in rescue centres.
I grew up with cats and I can't see me having a dog... I'm sure my husband would want one but I'd be the one stuck at home with it all day  :-\

Pictures are Johnny the hamster, "rescued" when a local breeder passed away suddenly due to diabetes complications. Other breeders took up her stock and gave them away (asking for a donation to diabetes research). I suspect he was actually pretty full-grown when I got him in September 2006 so he's probably getting on a bit.
Katsu is the angelfish. B&W isn't really the best colour for him as he has funky colours for an angelfish - sort of reddish orange/yellow on top, white belly, and black spots. We've had him for nearly 2 years I think... I went out and got him all by myself, and he came home on the bus with me. He also wins the title of only fish ever to actually recover from illness within my care. That picture got put on cyanotyped postcards so he's also been around the world a few times.

until they realize you are not going to get rid of them and they get all cocky and demanding and full of attitude.  or, at least, that's what happened with ours.  i love him to death, but he is one spoiled brat and he knows it!

Some lovely dogs on here! Especially the hounds & the lurchers!

Here are my 2:

This is Dennis (aka Zoolander, aka The Beautiful Idiot, aka Den Den Dumb Dumb))

Dennis's hobbies include running away from plastic bags & other scary items, staring contests with the staffy that lives over the road, falling over, generally making an idiot of himself, & his soft toy otherwise known as 'heffelump baby'.

This is Millie (aka Millie moo moo, aka Millificent, aka Millipede):

Millie's interests include being smarter than Dennis, running around the park & terrorising little fluffy dogs, sleeping for 20 out of 24 hours a day, & conjuring up new ways of stealing food from the most inaccesible places you can think of.

(please excuse the dusty scans!)

Both are retired racers & they really are the best dogs I have ever owned!

Ha! you should have seen Dennis when he first encountered snowmen in the park. I had to street walk him for about a week after the incident as he was so terrified of them! I think there is definately a gene present in black hounds (esp boys) that makes them sillier than the others!

my last dog was a dachshund, he was afraid of anything he couldn't readily identify. grocery carts, the bags of leaves from the landscapers, etc.
took me 10 minutes once to figure out he was scared of a wooden pilon that happened to be taller than the rest along a sidewalk. 'course, i had to nudge it to make it move a bit when we finally got near it. just for laughs.
