The ultimate Filmwaster
« on: January 30, 2008, 03:59:55 PM »
Well, I must say I raise my hat to this guy!
He really deserves the "king of self coating" title!

He actually made his own film coating machine  :)

Worth checking it out.

can't find any examples of output, though.

Yeah- Just amazing. I came across those photos a few days ago and was amazed. I guess in a way it gives a bit of hope that even if the big companies stop making film, there will always be someone out there to pick it up. Even if it is smaller, DIY type companies, at least it will never die completely.

How long before Ilford swoop in and buy 'em out, a la Kentmere?

Very cool indeed.

Somehow, it made me want to have one in my garage instead of all the junk my dad stores in there :)

can't find any examples of output, though.

I'm not entirely convinced ... I would have thought someone with enough knowledge to build a film coating machine whilst overcoming the potential problems in chemistry etc would know the difference between large and medium format films.  I'm not saying it's not real, but I'd need more convincing.  THere are quite a few films on market that dont include rebate information, so these could be on any old cheap roll of film.

If it is all legitimate, all the best of luck to the guy.

I read the link on APUG yesterday. I must admit things are not necessarily very clear since it seems the builder is communicating through somebody else...

But from what I can figure out, the guy who built this is a retired chemist from Kodak Australia. He had access to the coating equipment and decided to build one "just for fun".

But on APUG, they say there could be issues with uniformity and scratching since he claims to produce a 3 layer emulsion by dragging the film through the machine 3 times...

But it looks promising, not that I would know where to start.

Seems everybody is talking about this thing, that series of images are consistently the most viewed photos on my flickr site.

It is, and thanks.

And now to clarify some points. I do not know much more than 35mm when it comes to film. The person building the machine, however, is indeed a retired chemist from Kodak.

This is not a commercial venture, nor is it "just for fun". The builder is wanting to seriously research new emulsions, and built the machine as a means of obtaining consistent and reliable coating this emulsion.

There are no scratching problems, and the only uniformity issue is due to bearing rumble in the coating roller which has several possible and  complimentary solutions.

If you look at the original link, there is an image taken through his microscope showing one of his test coatings with multiple layers.  This was obviously a non-active emulsion just to see how it went.

Stay tuned, this machine won't go away soon. I will try to document what he builds and creates, but a lot of it he doesn't want to talk about. (Especially recipes and stuff)

Thanks for the interest, be assured it is real and more importantly, possible.

excellent - and forgive me for questioning integrity, but the internet is full of stuff that never quite ring true.  best of luck to your mate and hope he has continuing fun with his hobby :)
