Topic: I have dirty pictures...

Well, not really...but don't you wish? Not me. I use Ilford XP2 Super quite often through my toy cameras, and keeping negatives clean and free from dust is a chore (I think we may have touched on this subject briefly once or twice) and find them very prone to picking up fingerprints and the like, even when using gloves. I have a Promaster soft cloth and use it in hopes of cleaning most of them up. Not always an easy solution, I'm afraid. Some of my best work is with the XP2, and I was wondering what I can buy to keep them clean and out of harms way, other than using the cloth...like some sort of liquid cleaner, etc.

Any info would be greatly appreciated...

prevention is best... when you get your negs put them right into a negative sheet and keep them in a nice container or some kind of binder that doesn't allow any kind of pressure on the negs.

maybe try this http://www.printfile.com/products.cfm for the storage of your negs...

if you already got some negs with dust or scratches you can try one of those little rubber things that blow air... used for cleaning lenses.  just use that to blow the dust off.  it's kind of like a brush with a hollow rubber thing at the other end that you squeeze to allow air to come out the brush end.  you can probably find it at your local photography shop or online at like www.bhphotovideo.com or some place like that.  i wish i knew what it was called... it's just some kind of lens cleaning utensil.  as a matter of fact... you could probably use one of those things they make for getting the snot outta babies noses... those would probably work too.  just make sure it doesn't have any snot in it when you blow them off.   

some of the people in my class would put their scratchy negs back in the water for awhile then put them in photoflo but you need a completely dust free area when drying them and that's hard to come by... i know it is in my house anyways.  negatives will attract dust when wet and prolly make it worse than it already was.

Being the old fashioned guy I am, I love using glassine envelopes for my negs. I use the Savage brand. You can get them directly from Calumet Photo (www.calumetphoto.com). The Print File neg holders are good, too. If memory serves me correctly, you can put your glassine sleeved negs in the Print File neg holders for added protection. As far as a good manual air blaster is concerned, there's the Giottos Rocket, an air blower that's shaped like a rocket and even has fins so you can set it up on a tabletop when it's not in use. Comes in three sizes. If you have serious dust and fingerprint problems, then you'll need a good film cleaner. I use Edwal Anti-Stat Film Cleaner. Contains no carbon tet but is flammable so don't do it in the kitchen near the stove, OK?  And if your fingerprints are still showing up on your new negs while using gloves, you need better quality gloves. Light Impressions Direct carries deluxe white cotton gloves -- a dozen for $24. And they're washable, too.

I have that red pump thingy with the brush, the cotton gloves the lab folks gave me, and had this emulsion cleaner, but can't find it...so I'm going to ask them to order that Anti Stat...it sounds like it'll do the trick. Also, I have most of my negatives in those sleeves like said, it's just when I go to take them out to scan, every available organism in my room attaches themselves like the plague. I think I need to clean my room more often. I'm so careless and a shame really...rather ignorant of me I know. I never have that problem when I use Tmax or the TriX, just that XP2. We shall see. Thanks for the tidders...

Sightly of point, but I've heard a good idea to run the shower super hot or turning on a humidifier, before developing or handling film as it can settle some of the dust in the room. Don't think it will help you with fingerpints. I keep everything in "Print File" archiving sleeves and inside these sorta binder/box things. If negs are majorly dirty, I just wash them again with some Fuji Driwell and give them a two-finger-twiddle-wipe (as perverted as that sounds...) Good luck...

As for the print files sleeves (or any clear plastic sleeves for that matter), they're the handiest since you can contact print through them directly

Thanks guys, for helping us stay on top of this problem. Being a small forum we do tend to avoid the worst of these pointless posts, but every so often we get hit so it's really appreciated when you report a new piece of spam.
