How do you like the new look?
« on: March 28, 2021, 05:15:55 PM »
...actually, that's not really a question, so don't feel compelled to answer  ;D but it should be obvious by now that we've switched over to a new theme from the standard SMF theme that we've been running with for the last few weeks. This is closer to the look that we had had here for the last few years, so hopefully you'll all get on with it just fine.

Any functionality problems should be reported here. We'll keep this post pinned for a couple of weeks for that reason.

Well done Ed! I like the simplicity of the theme. Everything is there without being visually distracting!

Do you plan on putting the stats page back?

Thanks Ed!
I always loved looking at what's going on :)

I'm wondering about something though. Do you have a "NEW" icon color choice?
When there are new posts, the little label tends to camouflage itself in the background color...

Just logged in from the work computer (was still on the "old" look, so a quick refresh gave me a direct A/B) and this is SO much better. Thanks again Ed!

Contrast between font and background too low, and font size too small - both of which impact on reading for any with weak eyes. [emoji: holding hand up]

You can always hit [ctrl]
  • on the keyboard, that's the zoom function.

Browsers remember the setting for each site separately. I use it all the time on the grocery store site.

I like the new look. The only suggestion I have is for the forum index. In the older designs it was possible to see which forum had new messages. With the new look I can't tell any difference between unread forums and read forums. Is there a way to change the design slightly to make the difference clearer? Cheers! :)

I also use it all the time on some sites, though I think that misses the point.

I agree with Sandeha. Contrast is a bit low and the font size could come up a bit. Other than that I like the cleanliness of the theme.

Well, you know, sometimes that's all you have to work with...
In the old pre-Chrome versions of Opera you could substitute your own CSS on sites to improve legibility. This has alas disappeared a long time ago.

You can still do it in most browsers, but it's per-page only.

It can't possibly be as easy as it used to be. In the old version there was a pull-down menu for that.

In Chrome, I use the inspector (right click context menu). But of course, style sheets are much more complicated now, so you have to change a lot of elements to get things looking the way you want 😁

Maybe this NEW icon would be an improvement

On the 'Which Board' page, there's no difference between forums with new posts and those without. Can one of the symbols be changed. I've missed a few posts through that. Ta.

I've just spotted something which strikes me as a bit odd...

When I call up www.filmwasters.com on my iPhone, the front page (before logging in) shows "collaborations". However, when I log into Filmwasters via my Mac, "collaborations" is nowhere to be seen. Is this intentional or some sort of a glitch?

Once I get into the forum on my iPad I can’t get back to the main page by clicking on the Filmwasters header.  I think it used to do that but now it just puts me right back onto the forum index.  To get to the main page where I can access collaborations I have to type in the address Filmwasters.com.

One of the things I find a bit annoying is that when I go to the main page, it asks me to login. But if I click on the Main Forum, I'm already logged in...
Not that it really changes anything, but it's just weird.

That's how it works for me too on a Win10 PC.

One of the things I find a bit annoying is that when I go to the main page, it asks me to login.
I don't get that but I don't see any options to log in from the main page either.

Also, the main page has several links that don't work. It could use a makeover.

Back to Pauls original issue. I don't get the problem. Would be worth clearing the browser cache though.

Ok, here's what I'm gathering from this thread, despite the fact that nobody has shared any screenshots with me.

1. Collaborations shows up when NOT logged in on an iPhone, but does not show up when logged in on a Mac -- need details on this and screenshots so I know exactly which links you're talking about on which pages

2. Once in the forum, when you click on the Filmwasters logo it goes to the forum homepage instead of the main filmwasters.com homepage -- This is the expected behavior. If we want to change it we can, but I'd need a majority of folks here (or just the admins) to agree to it.

3. When you navigate to the main page, it asks you to log in, but if you click on the Main Forum, you're already logged in -- this sounds like a caching issue, especially if others don't experience it. Try in an incognito browser and see if you get the same behavior. Also, I'd like clarification on what you mean by "main page".

4. The main page has several dead links -- By this, I assume you mean filmwasters.com. Yes, it does have a lot of dead links, and that needs to be addressed! One of the links was intentionally killed by request from an admin, but the others I'd have to investigate individually. Give me some time to do this.

Feel free to add more bugs or perceived bugs!!

What I call the main page is the Which Board page.
It's a bit like if the forum software didn't read the stored cookies when you first load this page.
But it's really puzzling as once I'm on the main forum and press the little link to go to the Which Board page everything is fixed...

Just put that issue last on the list as it's more of an annoyance than anything else.

But there's one thing I just noticed.
When you're typing a message and you scroll down to see the previous ones, the name of the authors is the same color as the background...

Woah. Yeesh, that's probably buried in line 52000 in some style sheet. Someday when I have a week or two to search for it, I'll find it 😁

Oh, it's worse than that actually, it's a <h5>. So I can't change that without impacting every other instance of <h5>. Probably best to leave it as is, or we'll hear complaints about some random link somewhere else being invisible...

Oh crap...
Maybe just changing the back color for something a bit darker would be a better option?
But then again, all our buttons are middle gray, so that would affect the visibility of those in a bad way.

Oh and what the heck, just leave it as is. I can always just highlight the name to see who it was  ;D
It adds an air of mystery to the whole affair.  ;)

Thanks for checking it out

Hi Satish - that's correct. However, I genuinely have no idea how to take a screenshot from my iPhone - so please just trust me that when I put "filmwasters.com" into the search engine, I can see "collaborations" in the header / banner below the Filmwasters logo (and it allows me access to that page when I do log in) but, when I click on my link to "filmwasters.com" from my Mac Mini I don't see the page - nor can I find it anywhere on the site.

I posted a link to the forum on Facebook and it came up with some graphic I didn't recognise. Checking the forum headers there's no Open Graph meta information. Minor thing but adding some OG meta info would make links on social media look a lot better.

Back in 2016 in San Francisco I took this pic with my exakta....probably a reflection, but odd as the frame before it of the same exact scene showed nothing.  Please excuse the excessive post processing...I just stepped it up to accentuate the sky ::)
