These camera strap extender thingies. I need a bunch more because I have straps like the one pictured with metal clips at the end and they're uncomfortable to hold while shooting. Perusing Adorama's catalog I don't see anything that matches...

The problem with that is only old hippies use hippie straps anymore. Look for strap lug protectors on eBay.

Adorama and Al. only sell stuff for modern cameras that have a strap slot in them...
It's getting to the point that all of us are scrounging for the leftovers from a bygone era...

I'm trying to avoid buying leather. I know, it's stupid given the fact that I shoot film, but I try to keep everything except film vegan

You should try etsy.com. I searched for "camera strap cotton" and got more than 1100 hits. There's no lack of hippie straps, you can get them woven, embroidered, ethnic and personalized with your name woven into the fabric. If that's not good enough there are makers that will make them to order.

I have no problems with leather, I'm much more worried about plastic fibres like paracord. Micro plastic particles are a real threat to the environment and to humans.

Well, if I'd known that... A classic example of inadequate specification - something every software engineer will have experienced.

Try making your own. Two rings and a length of waxed cord is all you need and maybe a jig to hold the rings while you make it. Here's one I knocked up in ten minutes with what I had. Cord's a bit thin. There's a particular technique of tying this which I got wrong which is why you can see the ends sticking out.

I know craft stores have some smaller keyrings.
And fabric stores sell nylon webbing.

As for leather pieces, when the beast it came from has been dead for 40 years, there's nothing that can be done about it except take good care of what's left so that it's slaying wasn't a waste.

Ok, this is giving me some good stuff to go on, thanks! I'd be a little worried that i wouldn't tie the cord well enough and one fine day the camera would bite the dust

but I'll read up on techniques and knots and such.

Francois: that's one way of looking at it, but it's not the reality of the animal husbandry industry today. I could talk about it forever, but you don't want to hear it (nobody does, which is why I never talk about it

This is the nearest diagram I could find.

Loop the cord between the rings as many times as you want. Finish with both ends at the same ring. Take one end and loop it to the other ring (actually past it but not through the ring) and back again (1) then wrap the other end around all the cords as well as the loop you've just made (2) until you get to the other end. Put the end through the loop previously made (3) then use the other end to pull the loop and the other end back through the binding.

The secret is to use waxed cord. It sticks to itself and, done properly, it won't come undone.

Not sure where I learnt this. Too long ago.

That would definitely work very well.
Waxed flat string is super strong.
But if you can't get it, nylon with some cyano glue applied to the threads should also be more than enough (the glue prevents it from coming undone).

Key rings, of any size are at my local locksmith shop. Flat nylon webbing is available at my local outdoor & hiking supply.
Those items and the wife’s sewing machine and I make them up as I need them. I melt the nylon webbing ends with a hot knife to keep them from unraveling.
