1938 to 1941, in Sudan and Crete
« on: May 30, 2020, 08:30:33 PM »
Not a photo essay but a link to a selection of 140 of my father's photos taken when he was first in the Merchant Navy and then in the RAF at the beginning of WWII, in Sudan, Egypt, and Crete.

I scanned these around 15 years ago and you may have seen some before but I recently edited and resized them. What once looked large on XP gradually appeared to shrink with increases in monitor resolution. One of those long overdue tasks prompted by our lock-down, I guess.

There are some really interesiting photos there, thank you for sharing - but I don't envy you the scanning process.

Wonderful set of photos. The view of the pyramids from the sky really struck me as I can't recall ever seeing a picture of them from that height/angle.

You're right. No jet would fly by at that height there now. They had the opportunity and it looks as though he anticipated the shots to have them lined up so well.

These are amazing Sandeha!  Any idea what camera he was using?

There are at least half a dozen different formats among the negatives, but there's no record of any camera purchases.

These are fascinating photographs, particularly the aircraft and aerial shots, lots of history in them. The scanning must have taken a long time, the captions depict the context very well.

These are amazing photos! Thanks for posting them! Your father lived quite the life didn't he?

So it seems. But while these shots go up to 1941, and there are other rolls he shot of family from '46 to '52, there is nothing from 1942-45. It's a shame because he made several trips to Italy and Greece with the RAF towards the end of the war but no negatives have survived. It seems unlikely he stopped shooting so I suspect a whole batch of neg files must have been lost.

I've just noticed this article!

What a great set of negatives and images!

I really like the aerial shots of the pyramids also, and that smoking airman in k008 on the Flickr set!
