Help name my contraption
« on: May 14, 2020, 08:11:11 PM »
Yep, I'm looking for your help in naming my latest contraption!

They say confinement makes people do strange things. Well this thing definitely fits the bill.
It's a 35mm camera. It's got a 200mm f/8 lens. Right now it's focal plane shutter runs at 1/40. It's entirely made from junk. And when I say junk, I really mean junk.
Parts from orange crates, a wrapping paper tube, a paper towel tube, a bunch of paint stir sticks, a clothes pin, plenty of glue, a few screws and some cardboard.
The shutter can be cocked without exposing the film since it uses an automatic light baffle to set it up.
The lens is a duplet made from a broken pair of reading glasses. I did find the optical center for those since I wanted a half decent image.
There is the possibility to use waterhouse stops, but I haven't made any of them yet.
The viewfinder needed some work, but I think I might have fixed it this morning.
I can also focus the lens from infinity to just inches (I just need to add markings for that)

So, how would you name this?
I will show pictures of the final contraption when it gets a name ;)

But for an idea, here's one of the test pictures I took. Keep in mind that my viewfinder was definitely faulty when I took those so composition is nonexistent.

The Miroslav Tichy Special?
Any man who can see what he wants to get on film will usually find some way to get it;
and a man who thinks his equipment is going to see for him is not going to get much of anything.

Already on the right track.
I will say that it originally was inspired by Tichy but there's no way I could achieve the roughness and the amount of filth he put on his cameras.

Try harder. Throw it in the mud. Let the cat play with it. Drag it around behind your car for a few blocks. Filth is easy and can be a creative outlet; clean is hard (and boring).

I'll eventually probably drip some paint on it.
But I did find it a name! I've been looking for the right one for a couple of days now.
In the honor of the inspiration for this build, I name it the Miro-2C.
Also, in Spanish, Miro means "I'm looking", which is exactly what this thing does.
It's got a Musora 200/8 lens mounted to a Gravitar Shutter.

Here's the monstrosity...

Now that I've seen it I'd like to suggest the name "Who forgot to change the toilet roll cam?"

It came in handy that I had kept the last wrapping paper tube I went through.

I already modded it a bit. I added a foamie bumper on the bottom stop. It now releases nearly silently.

Great project! I would be careful taking it out in public though. People might get scared if you turn up with it and wearing a face mask.

I was thinking the opposite! It'd make a great street cam because nobody would suspect it's a camera! ;D

When I took it out for a test run that's exactly what happened!
There's a lady at the corner of the street who saw me with it, but since it looked like a completely harmless bricolage, she just smiled and waved at me.
That and the fact that 200mm is a pretty darn long focal length when you think of it, it keeps you away from the subject so that he doesn't notice he's being photographed. This is what happened in this one. I was a good 200 feet away from the lady who was walking her dog.

I've come to the conclusion that if people don't know that you took a picture of them, they can't harass you. So that means using a camera that looks nothing like a camera.

So that means that people won't mind being photographed using a box of corn flakes  ;D

I need to work on ways to camouflage a point and shoot using everyday objects...

Late to the party, but this is really cool, Francois.
Gutted that 02Pilot beat me to the Tichy.
But good luck with the Kickstarter campaign.

I think the kickstarter comment was more of a joke than anything...
I don't think I could find a way to turn this into a viable product when you consider for how much you can buy a crapcam on eBay.
