Praktica MTL 3 help please
« on: May 07, 2020, 08:02:24 PM »
Hey everyone!
I'm still hunkered down at home. Baking bread doing okay.
So I've been going through my camera collection and checking on some of the old clunkers I have and seeing if they work.
My Praktica MTL 3 mostly works....
by that  I mean it works great on all shutter speeds including bulb....but on the slower speeds like 1/8th second down to one second it gets hung up and the shutter remains open unless I change the speed which would ruin a slow exposure.

Has anyone taken one of these apart and is it worth it or should I just not use it with slower speeds and try to be happy.
thanks!

With some tough old 35mm SLRs I've taken to liberally squirting Ronsonol into the left side of the mirror chamber (facing it) if there are any gaps where it can drain to the shutter arm and linkage, or taking off the base plate and squirting around there. It evaporates quickly enough but you'll see with either of those if it operates better when wet. If it does, then that's a clue to continue the treatment for a while until it eventually runs well when dry.

Don't know that camera specifically, but more than likely it's just a gummed up slow speed escapement. Quick and dirty way to "fix" is to figure out where it is (often down low) and douse it with naptha, then work the shutter on 1 sec repeatedly and see if things improve.
Any man who can see what he wants to get on film will usually find some way to get it;
and a man who thinks his equipment is going to see for him is not going to get much of anything.
