Topic: Spirit of the Season Exhibition

I've got a few prints on the wall in the "Spirit of the Season" exhibition at the Independent Photographers Gallery in Battle (www.ipgbattle.com), East Sussex.  If there are any filmwasters in that area, it's well worth a visit, not just to see my meagre efforts, but to see some of the other amazing work there - stuff from Bill Brandt, Sheila Rock, Seamus A Ryan, Terry O'Neil, Fay Godwin etc etc.  it's really worth the effort of going. It runs from saturday until the end of January 2008 -  here' are a some pics of my daft mush  and pictures ,....

I just love when prints are matted to the visual center instead of dead center.
A lot more work to cut them out but how nicer!

Yes Becky, I did cut the matts and mounts myself.  And Francois, like you, it always makes more sense to me to display the prints like this, and not really a problem to cut, I just draw a line to get the square on the board, then disregard the extra bit and think of it like a square.  Perhaps my mount cutter makes it easier.

Most books I read on framing techniques recommend centering the image by making an X from corner to corner... and it always ends up looking so generic. Besides, you're stuck having to respect the aspect ratio of the frame, not the ratio of the print. When you frame a rectangular print, this usually doesn't work as easily as with a square print (or at least it didn't for me).

I have the Olfa mat cutter. Good thing about it is that it cuts both ways (using a V shaped tungsten blade which makes corners extra nice). Bad thing is that there is a big gap between the blade and the edge of the cutter, something that makes measuring quite hard. I was so sick of having to measure everything by hand that I ended up spending a few weeks making a piece of software just to calculate the dimensions! Something that isn't necessarily obvious. When you have to go to this length to get a good looking mat...

Well done on getting your images into the gallery, The fact that you are in hallowed ground and company should make you feel pretty good. I suspect your images are holding their own as ever.
