Rodinal with nephrolithiasis
« on: April 05, 2020, 12:48:24 PM »
I think I've kept my Rodinal bottle too long, it seems to have developed kidney stones! It rattles when I shake it, like there are some small pebbles down there. Should I see a chemist? ;D I souped a roll of expired Tri-X (2007, not refrigerated) in 1:25 from that bottle today, just fished it out of the tank. There are pictures, but they are a bit murky like the grayness of Ilford HP5, only darker. I used the same bottle of Rodinal only a few weeks ago on another type of (fresh) film, and it was perfectly OK. I exposed the Tri-X at 400 ISO and that is probably the reason for the dark negatives. I will scan the film in a few days when I have uncurled it, I seem to remember that Tri-X has a devilish curl.
Do you think I should continue using this afflicted bottle? There isn't that much left anyway so it will not be a big loss.

The only thing I can think of is that there could be sulfite crystals that formed at the bottom.
If the dev darkens a film leader, it should still be good.

I think I am unique in being the only person in the world who has experienced a bottle of Rodinal dying on me (it was only like 2 or 3 years old) ;D But in a slightly different experience, I had a bottle of HC110 congeal at the bottom, but it seemed to work ok if I used the non-congealed liquid part, so .... I don't know anything ;D

My Rodinal has crystals rattling around in the bottle and still works fine.

The old HC-110 is really tough. Mine says to dispose in 2012... it's still going strong and as yellow as can be.

I have always seen crystals form at the bottom of Rodinal/Adonal/Parodinal. It has not effect on the activity.
