I'm not very familiar with the N55 (I have the same as an N6006)... But unless Nikon did some magical work with your camera, it will work.
The lens being most probably not computerized, the camera will revert to either center weighted or spot mode metering (center weighted is the default, spot is a choice, matrix is disabled).
Also, since the aperture system doesn't use the little rotating lever around the lens mount or the aperture lever inside the camera, the lens will be full manual aperture.
You'd be surprised at how many lenses actually work with the old Nikons!
I tried out of curiosity to put a modern DSLR lens on my old Nikon. Except for the extreme vignetting at wide angles, I did get almost everything working on it... I wasn't impressed by the results but still liked the fact it fit on it.
So, nothing to worry about there. Just stick it on and shoot away
