'Moving On' Collaboration is Online
« on: May 04, 2010, 01:35:14 PM »
Hoo yeah. Great bunch of photos for 'Moving On' thanks to all who contributed...even those who drug themselves out of semi-retirement from active participation in the site to send in their work; it's greatly appreciated. Well done everyone.

Awesome, simply awesome. If I had to pick only one it would be Diane's, but they are all great.

What an outstanding collection!  My hat is off to all, but of particular note is the Tribute to Charlie and his room.  Quite moving.

Yes indeed, I think it's a good set too. I was struck initially by the Casablanca-esque feel to Andrea's photo, but there's no denying the strength of some of the others. Carlos's image is particularly striking.

There are some serious thought provoking images here...

An absolute credit to all participants and from me a very humble applause.

Wow! Great job guys. Some top notch stuff in there.

I don't know if anybody remembers when I asked if any of you ever suffered for your photography?
Here's the reminder link http://filmwasters.com/forum/index.php?topic=2948.0

So here is what I did for this collaboration.

Well, now that the collaboration is online, I can finally tell the whole story :)

Yes, it was a hare-brained idea. The theme had me totally baffled. At one point, in a stroke of genius, I thought it would be cool to shoot people going up an escalator. With a long exposure, I would get a blurred background and fairly static human shapes in the pictures. Escalators not being very popular in the region, I remembered that a large shopping mall in the next town had some. So I went there and found the perfect spot in a large department store. Gray walls, lights... perfect scene I thought. Since shooting on private property is not usually a great idea without an authorization, I tried to be as discrete as possible. I spotted a couple stepping on the stairs. I followed them with my camera. Like Wile E. Coyote, I had everything planned. 1 second exposure at f/32. Distance set to 1 meter on my 17mm lens. All I had to do was lay the camera on the handrail, aim and press the button. I already had timed it took about 3 seconds to be shuttled up to second floor. It was all planned perfectly... except for one thing. I hadn't noticed that at the point where both the up and down escalators cross, the store had installed some very discrete aluminum and glass barriers to prevent kids from jumping from one side to the other. So I hopped on the stairs, laid my camera down, quickly aim, press the shutter and WHAM! I ran head first into the barrier! Once at the top floor, I was rubbing my head only to notice I had blood running down my forehead. I clerk noticed it and called security. First thing I know I'm sitting on some lawn furniture talking to the store manager (who was really nice I must admit) with a husky security inspector wearing blue rubber gloves who was cleaning up the wound with some disinfectant pads.

This is also visible in the picture when you follow the light streaks: the short squiggle is my head stopping my entire body from moving on...

Now what I wouldn't do for you guys   :-[

Great photographs from all concerned. It was odd, but, I could have sworn I had missed the deadline so when I was looking I was very surprised to see one from me!

Ah, sweet dementia!

I drew such a blank when this collaboration came out and I'm hitting my head like 'I get it, now!!' - - such fantabulous images, I've thoroughly enjoyed this team effort!!
(... Francois - goodness, THAAAT's what happend to you!; Phil - stunning capture and how ironic that you mention a bit of dementia when your subjects are perhaps more at the age of such).

Another great collaboration. I love doing them, it's a great excuse to experiment.
I keep going back to Jason Langley's image, there's so much to see in it. I especially like the tiny polaroids at his feet.

Hopefully next time I'll really shoot an image with the theme in mind and not just try to find an image that I already shot and that might fit somehow ;)
