So what did Santa bring you?
« on: December 28, 2018, 01:43:33 PM »
Just out of curiosity, what did Santa bring you this year?

For me, it was books. A massive tome on the history of photography, a book on small secondary houses and one on cars that has a good section on lemons and commercial failures (hoopties always give you the best stories).

So, what about you?

I got a photo book and some photography gloves where you can clip back the index and thumb tips to have better control. Tried them today with the Rollei 35 and it worked well (even with this small camera).

I have a pair like that and it's true that they work great.
I had another pair that was just knitted with some rubber dimples on the palm and fingers, but these were really bad as you could feel the cold wind sail straight through them! Both were by Lowepro.

I also got a massive tome on the history of photography - actually a little to large and heavy to sit comfortably on my lap for long; second-hand for £3.  I also got some film for Kosmo, along with their funky T-shirt. 4 pairs of winter wooly sock, just in case I ever sufficiently manage to motivate myself to step out into the wilds of the UK in winter. I know - I thought that unlikely too.

Lastly, I spent some Christmas cash ensuring a happy summer- I signed up for the re-born packfilm, mentioned on another thread, savepackfilm.supersense.com. Yes, I agree it's horribly expensive, but much as I enjoy wasting Instax, it's not the same. Too small. Too perfect. Too predictable. I'm not expecting packfilm to be any of those. So, the idea: takes two cameras (remember those days) and waste ordinary film for most of the time, but take a single packfilm exposure to act as a summary of the shoot. That's the plan.

What was missing from Santa's bag was the same thing I request each year - more motivation to waste more film the following year. But next year will be my year to waste more film. I'm going to take film cameras only on all business trips (compact 35mm) and holidays (SLR). It's a start.

Looks like it was a pretty good day.

I must admit that motivation was pretty hard to have for the last few years....

I got a Peak Design Slide Lite strap. I like it a lot because of its quick release which is still quite sturdy and well made. I used to have camera straps on most of my cameras and that makes it a pain to store them in a cupboard (or a bag, for that matter). But with the pd strap the only things that remain on the cameras are the little anchors. While the purists may question the style I personally appreciate the convenience. :)

I got the book "500 Cameras" by  Todd Gustavson. I like the way it groups them by type rather than just being a chronological list, you get a sense of evolution in a particular camera type over the years. Some interesting ones in there too.

I didn't even get a lump of coal, and we celebrate Christmas and Hanukkah.  It's been years since my wife and I have exchanged gifts.  As far as I'm concerned, avoiding the holiday shopping season is the best gift anyone could give me.  I did spend time with family and friends and that was great.

Bryan, good to hear this. The only ones that get anything from me are my two kids, but that's really more of a way to ease their financial situation. Spending time with friends and family is priceless and the best investment you can make. I was reminded of that in a rather stark manner just one week before Christmas; I knew one of the two women that were slaughtered in Morocco. It makes you realize that time is the most valuable gift.

I hear you on the holiday shopping frenzy.
That's why mom and I bought all the gifts last August when a local bookstore chain was liquidating a whole bunch of books at 80% off. With the price of everything nowadays, I feel like it was the only responsible way to get nice gifts.

Yet I can never understand how people can justify such cruelty...
