and here are some images from Venice...
« on: December 22, 2014, 03:11:09 PM »
my Paris images (previous essay post) was the second leg of our trip. We also spent 3 nights in Venice. Film & camera particulars are the same. Like previously these are scans of 8x10 prints. The balance of Venice shots can be found in this album:

Fantastic pictures. Love all of them.
I have never been to Venice, but it is still on my list.

Love the photos, Frank.  I particularly like the dusk shot.  I've only ever been there for a day trip (when we crossed from Yugoslavia, as it was then) and we were gone by dusk.  One day, we'll go back but when it's a bit "off season" as the crowds were ridiculous in July.

Great images.  I long to go there myself one day.. Paul, do you have any idea at what time of year one can hope to find Venice less crowded?

I wondered about February but, apparently, that's when they hold the masked ball / festival - so best to find out which week(s) are best avoided.  My guess is January and early March when the weather is likely to be coldest and the daylight shortest. It's likely to be busy year-round but when we were there in July (several years ago, I will admit) it was impossible to move around freely due to the numbers of tourists.  I've also heard that there are some quieter bits, off the tourist trail - but you'd have to do some research or pay a local to act as a guide.

Thanks. These were my thoughts as well. I think February is the best time for large European cities. I have fondest memories of both Paris and Rome in Feb, even though I have been there many times and in many seasons.

An excellent set. No 2 is my favourite.

I've never succeeded in getting to Venice - tried to do the ferry from Yugoslavia in 1985 but it had to turn back due to rough weather.

sincere thanks for the many kind comments
some times you approach a trip with great optimism and you don't have much to show for it
I was pleased at the end of this trip..
