It's an article from the New York Times on the preservation of digital movies...
I wasn't expecting things to be that bad. Makes me cherish my old negatives.

I suppose that digital has a long way to go before it stands the test of time.

When will we reach the point that we can scan all of the data off of a 35mm frame?

This exact same thing is going to happen to everyday people, who have stopped using film, and have shot all their family photos on digital.

People have no idea that they are either, going to lose family histories, or continually have to pay people to retrieve and rearchive them. For some people this will be tragic.

At some point this is all going to hit the fan & I'd bet we'll see consumers suing because no one ever told them that their grandparent's photos were going to disappear.

Already been done, check out the imacon line of scanners distributed by Hasselblad.

8000 optical dpi for a 35mm frame should be plenty to see the grain structure... and at the price of a small car, it's sure to do the job.

Nikon also makes great scanners.

I've had a few people tell me they lost their family pictures on the PC already.

If they send their hard disk to Drivesavers, they might be able to get them back... but it's expensive... but pictures are priceless...

Well, if it will make you feel any better, I'll sell you my Nikon scanner for $24,000.

I keep banging on about this topic to friends and usually start with something provocative like, "There is still no cheaper way to store images for the future than as film negatives" - OK, so 'negatives' isn't entirely accurate, but if you start with 'transparencies',you lose some people right from the start. It usually starts a lively discussion and definitely gets people thinking.

I find it odd when people think there's something unusual about using a film camera and then lose pictures left, right and centre.

Also, I couldn't afford a pro digital slr but I can afford a pro 35mm camera.
