Not an effect I personally like to be honest but typical of these simple lenses. I always believed it's caused by vignetting of the lens (though there's various theories about) and this lens does vignette at wide apertures. All these were taken at f/4 as it was a dull day. The vignetting in the third image was natural - I didn't add it - which shows how bad the lens is in that respect.
The third image really looks more a vignetting than a swirl to my eyes... and I personally love this kind of effect ! ;)

Agreed. I think it depends on the type of background. Plain backgrounds just vignette while complex ones produce the swirl.
